Forum site access slow-down

Posted by Michael Robert on 21 Dec 2023, 20:37

Hello,
just wanted to share an observation. Sometimes when I access the site the pages build up really slowly or the simple access takes ages - I mean minutes. Not a surf but more of a climb. Sometimes it works just as it has always done.
Anybody else experiencing such troubles?

Greetings
Michael

Same here. And, for some reason, I have to log back in almost every time.

Our server is getting old, and we have to move to a new server.
This will take some time to do cause of timeproblems.
So we have to deal with it for the time beeing.
But we know it's slow, but have to move the whole forum in the future, and working on that.

thanks for your patience, literally hahaha

Thanks for the update on this, I had been wondering whether it was just my computer!

Many thanks to all the admins for keeping this forum going, we wouldn't have it without your time and commitment!

Thanks for the information, Remco, because I'm suffering from the same problem. We will be patient. ;-)

It's indeed worrying, as now the forum appears as "Not secure!" and this makes that my current connection refuses to connect to the forum. I was thinking the forum was gone for good! I asked my brother who is in Malta to check and when he told me it worked for him, I have investigated and through Opera browser it works!

It needs indeed fixing, as many members or possible future members will think the forum doesn't exist or work anymore.

Tried for 3 days to post the latest Mars News, yesterday I finally managed to do so in a excessively time-consuming way.
This small routine post took me just under an hour to complete and unfortunately I couldn't correct it because the pages either didn't load at all or only very very slowly.
This situation, which continues for some time now, makes the forum increasingly unattractive for users.
If the administrator is unable to maintain the site for time or other reasons, someone else should perhaps take over?
It would be a great pity if this once great place for hobby enthusiasts continues to be unusable and could eventually become defunct. :(

I hope that will not be the case as my work is on these files!

I am about to commence my next project but would not wish to lose it or the many friends gained over the years.

Best wishes,

Chris

Hi all,

I'm aware of the issues with the forum and I apologize for the inconvenience.

What currently is causing the main issue is that every visitor gets assigned the same IP address while these should be unique. This makes it look as if the website is being loaded/visited by many of the same people at the same time. See it as if a large group of people is trying to squeeze through a small door. This causes the website to slow down. On top of that the SSL certificate expired and can't be renewed for this particular server.

To fix this I need to change some settings in the server. The company that currently is hosting the forum would like me to move the forum elsewhere, since they don't want to be responsible for it anymore (financially they earn basically nothing on this forum). I would like to do that too so I'm more in control of everything myself and don't have to ask them for stuff everytime. To be able to do that I first need to upgrade the forum to a newer version. All of this would take me a couple of days work.

I currently simply lack the time to do that. I bought a house in December and every bit of free time, aside from my full time job and being a parent of a demanding 4 year old, is spent on renovating the house. I do hope I'm able to make time soon to fix all of this, as I'd like people to enjoy this forum as they've been doing for over a decade.

I do very much appreciate all the people financially supporting the forum. Without these contributions the forum would simply have not existed anymore. To those who contribute, you are responsible for keeping this forum online for so long. Your contributions really do matter.
