I find cutting down on highlighting levels helps.
I now don't highlight black, except on horses and bearskins, and only one lighter shade. the blue coats are just a dark under coat and a lighter one. The white on these guys is- 1 carefull foundry arctic grey A undercoat leaving black outlines, a quick arctic grey B top coat, and the white hightlights very quick. (all six men in under a minute). The straps are just the dark grey with white on top, no mid coat and epaulettes are just white on black. The red plumes etc are just wine red with scarlet on top.
I was using three sometimes four higlights, but I have found if you are really carefull about your colour choice you can get away with two, sometiems less for smaller areas.
