Hello,
this is a huge honour to win this duel. My first win. Thank you for all votes, comments and to Mr X who did a great job!
As to the question hwy I turned the Duke of Nassau into Michel the elk. Well - when I painted I decided to go for a more finely structured cloth for the hussar pelt. By doing so the figure looked at me and I looked at its face, and "he" said, please let me be Michel Ney. Somehow the resemblance of the face is that to me. Of course, the uniform is not correct, and I don't have any reference for such a non-uniform. However, maréchals can wear what they want (Joachim Murat surely did that). What's the point of being a Maréchal if you can't?
The Elk of Elchingen is more of a play with words knowing that German "Elch" is an elk, and that in German an "Elch" is an expression for a person who feels important.
Anyway. It was great fun to paint that animal, and then to come out a winner is surely a treat.
Cheers to Benno's Forum
