Here are a few photos of my version of Perry Miniatures’ Thomas Picton who is nearing completion. He just needs touching up in one or two areas, and then basing alongside Wellington and perhaps Uxbridge.

These first photos show him painted but unvarnished. As I paint in oils the linseed carrier oil that aids in the paint flow ends up giving a gloss sheen to the finished figure. Definitely a distraction for the observer.











In the mounted version I have put some of my new AK ultra Matt varnish on him and boy does it improve the figure enormously.

Hello Bessiere! Yep, not only do I paint 28mm Napoleonics but I’ve also painted quite a lot of 18mm Napoleonics by AB. I think changing scales (and periods) is a way I find to help combat that terrible tedium demon.

Lovely shading and highlighting.
I always use two coats of varnish: first the Vallejo polyurethane to make the figure rock hard, then the AK ultra matt to get that very matt finish.

Very nice work indeed and that varnish on Mr Picton’s coat looks excellent.

A small point but British horses had their tails docked, a practise which was particularly distressing to the animals when in the Peninsular with all the flies whizzing around in summer.

Super painting, you have breathed life into them.

Thanks for the reminder about the British practice of docking horses’ tails but do you think that applied even to the mounts of Welly and his staff? (What was the logic behind doing it)?
You mention Michael how sombre and austere Wellington and his staff were. Very true! But wait til you see my version of Uxbridge….. !!!
I think the Perry Brothers decided to go to town in their sculpt of Uxbridge to counter the drabness of the rest of his staff!
