Strelets news 2020 - 2024

Japanese anti-tank team. I think the item the figure is holding is an explosive charge on the end of a long pole intended to knock out tank tracks.

Very dangerous pastime.

The marching Bavarians look pretty smart but the other set does nothing for me. The bayonet ends of the muskets on all the Bavarian sets tend to get a bit clubby and misshapen. 3 out of 4 ain't bad tho so call me a happy customer.

Garde du Corps, masters.
Being not a specialist in this era I have to say I get confused with the WSS cavalry sets. It confuses me: haven’t we seen these already?

It is remarkable that Strelets have decided to model all parts of the Maison du Roi cavalry for the War of Spanish Succession. This latest set represents the companies of the Cardes du Corps, an important part of the Household cavalry. They do, however, look quite like the Gendarmes and Chevaux-Legers that Strelets have posted masters for recently, so a sense of 'deja-vu' is quite understandable.

Horses are the same for all WoSS sets so far announced, which is not strictly speaking accurate but I guess does speed up the production process.

The new set is suffering a little from 'head and hat expansion', and these are now growing somewhat out of scale. Hopefully this will not notice when the figures are mounted.

My biggest gripe is that Strelets still show no signs of producing a set of French Line (Leger) cavalry; if they don't come up with such a set then I'm afraid that this very commendable WoSS series will be notably incomplete. But the cavalry sets that we have seen masters for do look good and should be a joy to paint, with masses of detail sculpted in.

I think "big head" is a hallmark of all/most Strelets' sets. Italeri are, if anything, worse. Whilst not ideal, I think I can live with it.

As for the hat thing, I'm not so sure. I'm certainly a tyro with regards to the WSS but I know in the SYW, tricornes (to use the modern term) could be a range of sizes, even in the same unit.

If there was a rule (& there wasn't), I'd say the more important the man, the bigger the hat.

Feel free to correct my no doubt wayward views. I live to learn! :-)

It seems to be arty. The left one is opening the block and the right holding a ramrod. It seems to be a light artillery piece.

Yeah, no regular cav seems like a real weird decision. Anyone doing the period probably doesn't need more than one box for most of the Maison du Roi sets.

I think Line cavalry of the period looked pretty much the same (apart from the uniform color), so if they don't produce French Line, their English cavalry, Zvezda's GNW Russian or Swedish Cavalry or even the old Strelets GNW cavalry will do. I'd rather like to see some French dragoons (different hats/caps) mounted as well as dismounted and Austrian or Bavarian Cuirassiers or Danish horse (tricorns and plate armour). Besides, while French and British troops are a fine start for WSS, with just these it's as incomplete as Waterloo without Prussians, Dutch or Belgian troops. Let's not forget that there were large bodies of Dutch, Danish, Prussian, Austrian, Bavarian Spanish or Portugese troops present in almost every important battle. And while there are a good many infantry sets around that can be used for any of these nations (if you're not to much into the finer details), I'm not so sure when it comes to cavalry, so I'd prefer if they'd provide some more sets here.

All the WSS masters look very good. I agree that they have probably done too good a job of covering these more specialist units at the expense of some of the more basic requirements. Some dragoons (mounted and dismounted) would be good. I would like to create something with the British foot guards advancing towards the village of Blenheim. However, their main opposition were dismounted dragoons. So that idea is on hold for now.

Who would have thought that when the first masters of the British infantry in advance were shown around 14 months ago, Strelets would go on to produce another 15+ sets for the range i just over a year...Great work Strelets.

Now if only they'd move onto the French and Indian War...
