Hesse-Darmstadt Infantry Regiment Gross-und Erbprinz Nr. 4

Posted by Bill Slavin on 01 Apr 2023, 20:47

Here is the last of the units I plan to do for Leval's 2nd (German) Division in Spain. Again, I was cleaning out the cupboard, and this time utilized a bunch of HaT light infantry (1805) that I had decapitated years ago! Clearly this meant decapitating an entire new bunch of figures, the donors this time being the HaT Ludzow Friekorps who (at the moment) I have no intention of ever painting! Uh huh.
The detail on these figures, although well-sculpted is light, making it a bit difficult for these old eyes to paint (so don't judge too harshly) but I had a lot of fun again with campaign conversions, sculpting trousers, head scarves and giving them forage cap head swaps to give them that ragtag look.
There are a whole lot more photos, history and details on the conversions here on my blog:

Here are a few photos.

Once again Bill you have taken an indifferent set of figures and converted them into something special.

The different headwear etc and campaign style brings them to life.

Marvellous work.

You are getting me thinking about future projects.

My wife will not thank you !

Ho ho.

Best wishes,

Chris

Another nice addition to your peninsular army with these Hesse-Darmstadt troops. The conversions and the campaign look are more than successful again.
thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Chris and Patrick. They were a tough bunch to paint (now I remember why I set them aside to begin with!) but they were fun to do.

Great work again Bill. They certainly look like they've been on campaign somewhere very punishing indeed.

Painted in an expertly tatty fashion. I can only imagine the labour entailed but it was certainly worth it.

Another fine and 'tatty' unit for your Peninsular armies. I am very much admiring the way that you create units from bits and pieces 'from the cupboard', and the end results are very good indeed. Great work!

In wargames' terms, I love to have elite units dressed in as natty a style as possible, standing alongside the "shop-soiled" types who probably did most of the fighting. I think these Hessians hit the mark.

Wonderful new units, Bill. It's difficult to identify the original figures after your amazing conversions and paintjob. By the way, don't worry about your old eyes...the result is, once again, superb.

Not my usual period of interest, but I enjoy the colors and the ways you've personalized each of these fellows!

I find the painting of the figures extraordinary. Everything is painted coherently and harmoniously. I can't say whether they are historically correct, I have no idea about the Nap era. I definitely like them.
