Oh, joy! I was hoping to see your ACW armies as well. It's a growing collection! I hope you can get back to your painting table soon.

Absolutely splendid. It's always a high point in my day when i see you post something here on Bennos.

When it's cavalry it's even better and when the photos are this big - i am even more inspired. I truly love your way of depicting troops, your way of basing them. You capture the dirt and grime of the battlefield better than anyone - congratulations.

It's great having you back.

Excellent painting as always and nice to see you back in action.

Just a small point but the cavalry colour of service was yellow. The chaps with the blue hats would indicate the infantry arm of service.

You could have gray hat tops with a yellow band which would be correct.

A dab of paint and all is well.

Wonderful stuff which I wish I could pinch to flesh out the Antietam ranks!

Best wishes,

Chris

Hello...!

Image

Lots of different combinations, mostly amongst the volunteers or State regiments...
I can make mistakes and I tend to stretch accuracy a bit aiming for the good look of my armies, but usually I base them on real one's...

Dear C M Dodson, you'll be amazed with the enormous variety of ACW voluntary units uniforms ...

All the best!

Joan

Hi,

Yes the plethora of militia units in the early Confederacy was indeed bewildering.

I have the same uniform books as yourself although I prefer the works of Don Troiani as a reference. He is a recognised authority with a large personal collection of Civil War uniforms and artefacts.

The original Confederate uniforms from all branches of the military closely followed the lines of the U.S. Armed Forces. This was until June 6, 1861, when the Confederate Council issued General Order 9, the new regulations for the Confederate Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery.

After that most militias were either incorporated or their uniforms were not replaced .

Having said that, the hats would probably last the longest!

Happy modelling.

Best wishes,

Chris

Then there's homespun. Early war was a showcase of militia uniforms but after a year in the field most were worn out and replaced by what could be had. Butternut was wool dyed with walnut husks. Later war you could have Confederates wearing any variety of clothing. Food and ammunition were the priority over uniforms and only officers would wear anything standard.
Cheers,

It's funny that now you mention it dykio these piccies are a bit on the dark side. Why hadn't i commented on that? Maybe i thought it was a night raid so it goes without saying, the darkness was deliberate......

Dear friends, thank you very much for your always constructive comments.

You are absolutely right, the images are definitely too dark.
Sorry.

The fact is that I always do a little bit of editing on the images I make (professional influences I imagine... :-D ) and in the color editor I can see them well. It is true that I have a certain tendency to generate dense images, loaded with dramatic atmospheric effect but when I give them the ok, I don't see them as dark as here.
I don't know if it has to do with uploading them to Imgur or what.
I will try to solve the problem.

Dykio...

354 infantry
39 cavalry
78 artillery
19 guns

and lots more comming... :eh:

all the best!

Joan

I can only say again the most repeated words in all the comments, Joan: excellent, wonderful, brilliant, nice work as always or like usual. :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

We are all too accustomed to so immense, beautifully painted formations.

So I can only say "WOW" and repeat: what a lot of nicely painted ACW figures!
thanks for sharing and keep them coming.

My compliments on an array of very fine ACW cavalrymen. The photographs may be dark, but nevertheless the quality of the artwork shows through. Well done !
