Started these chaps, have finshed now, but they are not based or matt varnished yet. these are again "speed painted" for wargaming, though my speed painting is all relative in that it takes me probably an hour a figure nearly!

These are really great! :D
They don't look like they're "speed painted", or each painted in an hour.

I tried speed painting once, I ended up painting each figure one by one...

These HäT figures are nice BTW.

I know what you mean, it has taken me about 10 units worth of painting to decide on an exact style that I; A) like and B) can do in under a millennium a battalion. Given that the battalions I use are 24 men plus 2 for skirmishers, cavalry; 12 men and batteries; 2 guns with 13-9 men depending on poundage, you can see why speed is of the essence if you ever what anythign other that a 1 on 1!

the other units are O.K but it has only been the last 2-3 where I have been truly happy with them. My Italians (on the HaT page) were the turning point!

Welcome Tom! :D

I will try to speedpaint a bunch of HäT french in greatcoats in my vacation next week. If I ever want a wargame army I need to get more experienced in speedpainting.

I find cutting down on highlighting levels helps.

I now don't highlight black, except on horses and bearskins, and only one lighter shade. the blue coats are just a dark under coat and a lighter one. The white on these guys is- 1 carefull foundry arctic grey A undercoat leaving black outlines, a quick arctic grey B top coat, and the white hightlights very quick. (all six men in under a minute). The straps are just the dark grey with white on top, no mid coat and epaulettes are just white on black. The red plumes etc are just wine red with scarlet on top.

I was using three sometimes four higlights, but I have found if you are really carefull about your colour choice you can get away with two, sometiems less for smaller areas.

Thanx for the tips! I don't have any foundry paints (don't have a credit card so I can't buy them in the Netherlands). Perhaps I can find some on DUZI tomorrow.

PS. Do you use many foundry paints?

Yes, I had mainly games workshop and a few vallejo ones, but the pigment in the foundry ones is excellent, and the pre mixed shades is a blessing! I also like the new humbrol acrylics, great pigment in those too.

Next time I order some I'll give you a shout, we might be able to sort something out. In addition when you spend £50+ you get free postage, so its only worth buying if you want lots, or a few of you buy together.

Didn't knew that Humbrol had acrylics. Can you compare them to Vallejo/Foundry or GW?

It would be great if you could give a shout the next time you order. Their system of pre mixed shades is fantastic indeed. There is so much more possible with them.

The humbro acrylics are new, they are trying to expand into what the consumer wants.

from use I would say they are better than Valleho and Foundry, but the range is quite short yut. They cover the same colours as their old enamels, but not all of them. They do have some of the great green and karkhis and there great feld grau for WW2, and that lovely scarlet for british redcoats.

I have never seen such a flat matt finish on acrylics before. It is almost like a chalk board when dry if you shake and stir it well. (though I find that is the secret to getting a nice finish off all paints usually)

If you can't find them locally or they are not available, pm me your address and I'll post you a pot of a colour for you to try.
