Many years ago I toyed with blacklining, washes and a lot of other techniques. I think I remember that I liked the blacklining, but not the washes. And what did I end up with? Washning! Not blacklining. :eh: Maybe try it again for a single figure in the future, but for now it is washes.

Another concept that gives a nice dark outline where shadows would form is to use a darker red color, such as hull red or red mixed with some black, as a base coat then build up your regular red color away from the transition area. The Vallejo reds are good for that because they are a bit translucent anyway, so it can take a few layers to get to the point you want.

Hey Aaron, I think ythe blacklining is about the straps and bag/holster. The technique you are mentioning I did on some of my bigger figures. Starting with a dark color and then in two or three layers to a lighter one. Here is an example with blue and red:
