He's actually a member of the "dragones de cuera" or "soldados de cuera", which were defensive troops created by the Spanish Empire in the 18th century to defend the frontier of the presidios of New Spain (Texas, New Mexico, Alta California and Baja California) in the territory of the present-day United States of America.
Their name was derived from the cuera, a long sleeveless coat made up of up to seven layers of fur, highly resistant to the arrows of enemy Indians, which they wore as protection. In addition to a rifle and sword, they were armed with a spear and a shield.
