English Civil War Clubmen

Posted by Alanus on 23 May 2010, 01:41

On 4 August 1645 a group of Clubmen (local militia) were defeated by some of Cromwell's troops at Hambleton Hill. Their flag was captured, and although no image survives, the motto on the flag was recorded ('If you offer to plunder or take our cattel, be assured we will bid you battel').

I converted some figures to represent the Clubmen. Most of them are from the very useful Imex set of Pilgrims, and one figure is from the ACTA Royalist Artillery, with his rammer and bucked replaced with a quarterstaff.

If anyone wants a copy of the flag, you can find it over on my blog.

Cheers,
Alan.

  :-) Finally someone has represented these guys   I think I read somewhere that they became the third force in the ECW and made both Parliament and royalists have to consider them.
Well done in representing this lot   and a good use of the pilgrims
I like the oldie worldie writing on the flag.
Didn´t the clubmen wear white strips of cloth???

Do you know the source for this? My understanding is that 'Clubmen' was a fairly catch-all term used to describe locally organised groups that had all sorts of motivations. Some may have had Leveller or other religious convictions, others were just wanting to stop stragglers from the armies of either side from stealing their belongings. I don't know of any evidence for 'Clubmen' having a sense of unity with other similar groups - they seem to have had very local concerns. Happy to be proven wrong on any of this.

The reference I made to white strips of cloth was something from my (now dulling) memory and school long long ago.
BUT!! :-) I´ve just found something after an internet search, 1st hit as well!! :-)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clubmen
and this;
http://www.thedorsetpage.com/history/Do ... lubmen.htm
The second refers to white cockades, the first to white ribbands
basically a cockade could be either, a strip of ribbon made into a knot and worn on the hat, maybe armbands are more likely.

Hope it helps :-)

the flag gives a very good impression.
no matter English, or Napolean figures, or Samurai, as long as people add flags, they will come to live, just like magic ;-)

Been thinking of working on some of these myself, using the same figs, and perhaps adding some characters in rustic smocks:

Cracking stuff and great flag. Last time I was up on Hambledon Hill (1988) it rained heavily, so I would paint these guys with really floppy hats and gloss varnish :(

Thanks for the comments chaps. Springinsfeld - for a matter of interest, is there any sort of memorial to the 'battle' on Hambledon Hill?

Pity there doesn't seem to be any connection with Hambledon in Hampshire - then you could have had a couple of Clubmen wielding early cricket bats...
