Scout Carrier in Progress

Posted by JurgenH on 07 Feb 2026, 13:00

Hello all
So here is my preliminary model product. It is a Scout carrier MK I IBG in britisch Service. The carrier is from 5th . Infantrie division ,Spring 1940 in Begiun/ France.

Let's get this out of the way first!!! The tracks are for masochists.
While deburring, the support roller jumped out of the tweezers and landed right in the transparent pot. It was once a small candle. The other landing gear parts were in the cup.
Of course, it had camouflaged itself in gray. I quickly built a new roller. I found the original roller about a week later.

My favourite WW2 armoured vehicle!
I look forward to seeing your work on this one.

BTW the crew shown in the box art look odd - almost Russians rather than British? Was this a vehicle sent to the Russians?

Yes, Donald.
You're quite right. Many carriers came to Russia under the loan agreement. They didn't have too many reconnaissance vehicles either.

Let's continue with the carrier. I thinned out all the side walls to represent the thin armor. It turned out to be a bit of a scratch build again, as
The kit is a Bren carrier MK I, not the Scout carrier. The conversion was relatively easy and a lot of fun. The history of the Bren variants is a bit complicated and requires careful research. My colleagues at Missing Lynx kindly supported me in this. Some details are still missing, such as weapons and cargo. I couldn't decide whether to build it with or without a radio. The model-building monster took care of that for me after it ate the antenna base.
I rummaged through my stash and found something simple yet beautiful. The base is Matchbox LRDG with a few modifications.
I rummaged through my supplies and discovered something simple yet beautiful. The base is Matchbox LRDG with a few modifications. The figures are from Zvezda and have been finished for 3 years. Except for the farmer's wife, who is from Pegasus. Driver Ali Express
8th Army, and still needs long sleeves on his shirt.
For the base, I made some additional accessories, bricks, veneer wood, and, as you can see in the last picture, some tin roofing. The template is from the railroad accessories.
Fast food packaging is rubbed off with a rubber block.
I want to use it to cover the holes.
I removed the three gas cans; they don't fit in with the 1940s era.

Nice progress. Good to see your creative work on the old Matchbox base.
(Isn´t this thread in the wrong category? Shouldn't it be under Work in Progress?)

Huib ,it is right. I have done a wrong klick.
Hello everyone,
Here is the next small update.
The base has now been improved according to my wishes. I used a mini drill to add detail to the contours of the stones and beams and highlight their outlines. I added some veneer strips, as well as the roof parts. I also added some plaster pieces to the wall stones. The window pane was added with splinters in the frame and on the floor. Then I applied railroad grass with my mini grass cutter and trimmed it with a nose hair trimmer. For example, the fibers that protruded into the roadway.
I treated the edge of the grass with my mud mixture. These are all small details that are hardly noticeable but contribute to a better appearance. It's definitely exciting to place the two bases side by side and compare the details.
The four figures were given gas mask bags of German origin. The figures are from Zvezda and were already painted for Africa. I removed the bags for this. The driver is from AliExpress and was transferred from the 8th Army to the BEF. I filled in the bare arms with liquid filler. Nothing else has happened yet.
Only my farmer's wife still needs to be completely painted. She also needs a pair of shoes.

Here are the pictures without figures an carrrier.

There's a lot to like here. The ruin is excellent - the interior rubble is particularly well done IMO.

The vehicle looks about perfect. Boyes AT rifle? as well as a Bren? This, & some uniform details, make me think France in 1940?

Yes, Donald, you're right. 1940 is correct.
I had already mentioned this because of the cut-out jerry cans on the base. The mask pockets on the figures and the white square are all indications of the British Expeditionary Force in France and Benelux in 1940. I wanted to build the Bren a little differently. I've already built several from Airfix. The scout carrier was more common in the early war years than from 1943 onwards, which is why I chose this period.

Hello
Now for something a little curious. I don't know how it is in translations into other languages, but from English to German, the broad term ‘aircraft carrier’ always appears. I have read in several reports what this is all about. If I have understood the reports correctly, steel plates from a stranded aircraft carrier were used to build the Bren carrier. If anyone knows more about this, please feel free to join the thread.
It won't make you any less intelligent.
There is a German proverb that says, ‘You grow old like a cow, and you never stop learning.’ It rhymes in German

Hello, Jurgen. I may be a cow who stopped learning so the opinion, below, may be wrong & you may be right.

The connection with aircraft carriers appears incorrect. Apart from the unlikely occurrence of a stray, beached aircraft carrier (which one?) when they were building prototypes of the Bren Carrier, the vehicle was built in a dedicated program of designed prototypes that would not rely on scrap metal flotsam.

"Carrier" in English means to carry something. The first vehicles in the series that became the "Bren" were meant to carry machine guns & were called 'Machine-gun Carriers". The "Bren Carrier" - a later development- carried Bren guns.

This article is pretty complete and does not mention aircraft carriers.

So, nice story but untrue. IMO.
