A painting analysis

Posted by Ochoin on 28 Oct 2021, 06:10

I've just finished painting 8 Hun archers & their mounts.

My usual practice is to put paints away after a painting session but this time I didn't - amassing the several colours etc used to take them from bare metal to completion.

So: 1 primer, 1 metallic, 6 washes, 29 hues. From Vallejo, Army Painter & Citadel.

They weren't particularly "colourful" figures so I'm surprised. Do you use many colours?

It really depends on what I am working on.

If it is a single figure I go mad and use whatever I can find.

But if it is batch painting I tend to keep work with a few paints and mix and match. The philosophy behind that is that equipments - horse harness and thinks like baldrics and sword scabbards may be issued from a batch made by one manufacturer. The people making batches of equipment try to get them all the same, but colour variations happen naturally, so I try not to paint them uniformly because a) it looks better and b) it is less boring.

I don't count hem really, but sometimes I use a lot of bottles and cans. ;-)

A painting table with random ranks of Vallejo bottles? Reminds me very much of my own. :-D

I’ll be more likely to use fewer colors, but to mix them together to create variations for darker areas, brighter areas, and the like.
