Zvezda - Austrian Musketeers and Pikemen

These figs have been on my list for a very long time.
I start with the pikeman who I think is the best figure in the set.
I like how the modeller managed to achieve this casual attitude.
The buckles of the shoes and the pikes don't really shine that much.
But you have to make compromises when it comes to illuminate the figs.

They are magnificent!

The only suggestion I would offer if you add more to the unit is to not get hung up on the idea of uniforns.

A regiment was effectively clothed by its proprietor - nominally the colonel - eg Sir Michael Woodhouse's Regiment or Sir Nicholas Byron's Regiment. The proprietors received the money from his employer and he used some of that to arm and equip his troops. Because his profits were coming out of this money too it is rare that it was all spent on the men. One way of making savings was to 'economise' on things like clothing. Most times a man was issued with a coat of the chosen regimental colour and that was it. They would have to provide ther own breeches and so on. There are examples of breeches being issued as well - Charles I's Lifeguard of Foote were issued "suits of red" when they were formed in Oxford at the start of the ECW, and there were similar examples, but I suspect the majority of time it was just a coat.

If the soldiers were lucky they might also get issued with a pair of shoes - in England they were called latchets or latchet shoes and were "single-lasted" (normally shoes are made on a right handed shoe form called a last, and the would be a left handed one for the other foot.) With single-lasted shoes there is no left and right, they can be put on either foot.

Sword belts, and leather equipment would be supplied by a contractor and the nice thing about that is that generally they are usually the same colour or close variations of the same.

I look fowards to seeing more of these.
