Zulu War

Posted by Rich W on 19 Jun 2019, 21:34

I've had a much needed break from painting French Indian War figures and moved on to the Zulu War.

First up I have painted the Hat set. The skin tone looks a little too dark so the next lot I will experiment with different shade. Overall I think this is quite a nice set with some good details. Although these may not be up to other zulu warriors I've seen painted on here, but for my first attempts I'm happy enough.

Any feedback or suggestions are as always welcome.

Thanks!

These are beautiful. I think you have handled the skin tones very well.

i agree with the comments above, skin tone is right, we talking about deep black Africa people, in other words, maybe more simple, no moroccan there !

Thanks for all your kind words!

Here are some A Call to Arms Zulus. A really nice set that compliments the Hat set well. I've trialled a lighter shade of brown to see how it looks.

I've always had an idea that I'd tackle the Anglo-Zulu War one day, so I'm interested in your developing efforts. To my untutored eye, your chosen skin tones look pretty good to me. May I ask what base colour you are using?

Marvin, the first set of photos are using Vallejo burnt umber (70.941) whilst the second set are using vallejo german camouflage medium brown (70.826). I just added two coats of dark wash to it. No shading or highlights etc. When you compare the two sets in the flesh (so to speak!) rather than via photo, the burnt umber colour looks better. Hope that helps!

Here are my British artillery for the Zulu war. The figures are from Hat's colonial artillery and gatling gun sets.

Also been thinking of starting with the Zulu war, but at the moment I only have Hat's Zulu command, Strelets' Boers (both sets, can probably double as some civilians) and ESCI's old Zulu Brits and Zulus (none of them complete anymore). Your figures look very nice! And when I compare them with the first figures you showed here you have gone a very long way in a very short time!
