Two-wheeled French supply wagons

Posted by Bill Slavin on 05 Aug 2019, 21:54

I was inspired to tackle this two-wheeled wagon build last week. I had two extra draft horses from the Italeri Supply Convoy set that I had built last year along with a couple of seated figures in greatcoats left over from the same set, and had wanted to take a shot at scratch-building some more wagons for my French.
Full disclosure here - I honestly have no evidence wagons like these were ever used by the French in the Napoleonic Wars! It was just that I only had large wheels, and most French supply wagons I have seen have smaller wheels at the front.

I've included a step by step of the build along with a few more photos in my blog if anyone is interested.

Nice build, paint. And with a wooden structure.

Supply is now on the way.

Sorry, I am sure they are very nice wagons, but I can't stop looking at the horses! They are flat-out lifelike.

I'm not seeing any girls in this scene; perhaps because I'm too focused on the very well painted figures and waggons. And we shouldn't forget the ruined church in the background - it also looks really good!

And no one can give any evidence they never used them so it´s perfectly fine for you to do so :yeah:

Hi Bill.

Very nice as always.

Presumably once the advance got going an army would requisition any useful vehicle and stock it came across.

They certainly look the period.

Best wishes,

Chris

My thoughts exactly, Chris. I mean, we're not talking about anything as well documented or important as the colour of the piping on the drummer's coat in the second regiment of the Loyal Royal Grenadiers of Abyssinia here.

Various types of two wheeled carts were common in Portugal at least. Why wouldn't the French requisition some and perhaps adapt them to their needs? Very nice scratch builds.

Excellent work Bill!

I've been looking for two wheels wagons and I found something:

And here is someone who made some Austrian scratch build wagons with two wheels:

Seems to me that there where various two wheeled wagons in the Napoleonic period. ;-)

As the subject period is Napoleonic, naturally it's a Norwegian blue (Ex or otherwise)
