Alexander the Great, Hydaspes

Posted by Traveller1865 on 04 Jun 2018, 16:44

Well finally I made it, a 256 man strong Syntagma or Speira, and I have some more figures beyond that! But I really need to work on the correct formation.

Wow, what an impressive big army which I would like to see in action!
Will you add still persians against them? And give you us still some closer photos with some soldiers? Unfortunatly you are working only with one light for your photos, so most of the soldiers are disappearing in darkness....

Carlos is right, if persians are done they will be fighting for Alexander, but I don't really feel like painting another army right now...

Added some more figures to the "syntagma", also made a standarbearer though it's hard to see in the images..

Some more, apparantly Macedonians didn't use standardbearers on campaigns but it looks nice.

Interesting question, as there are no documentation about macedonian standard bearers but we can not say they had not..
i read somewhere about standards un the Seleucid army,a bit later, some "semiophoroi" (symbol bearers) For me it is quite reasonable to think that complex formations as a macedonian pile phalanx would use visual signs or standards for identification and transmisión of battle instructions..

In classical Greece they used trumpets, supposedly standards were of little use in so tightly packed phalanxes, the first reference to standards in Alexanders army came after Hephaistion's death and carried by cavalry. Still one has to wonder if they did not have some standard, some symbol of unit pride at least...
