The Wurst Artillery Set

Posted by FredG on 11 Jan 2018, 20:35

This lot took over the table, Austrian Horse Artillery. Again they're Newline Designs 20mm as is the majority of my Austrians. The only 1/72 I have are Hat Cuirassiers which fit in well with the new Uhlan set so I'll get another box of those done soon(ish).
If you wish to continue I must warn you that there has been some serious impaling done. I'll impale almost anything if the mood takes me :P

All cleaned up and ready to go

No time for dallying :-D , painting has started.

A quick coat of Mocha on the horses and a sepia wash ( still wet).

What I'm struggling with on these is a decent diagram or picture of the harness used. It'll not look the part if I don't add a few leathers here and there.

Thank`s for warning.
To put the poor impale stick into the hell of fire in the gun tube is for true sketchy.

The guys on the wurst seat look like a friendly bunch.

At least until you see them ramming the cannister down the barrel I suppose.

Thanks for looking Graeme. That top picture I have and a big zoom in does supply some info on the harness. The main information available seems to be in the gun and the limber. :yeah:

Hi FredG,
I looked up this project posted by my good but absent friend blucher1815red. It is all that is left of his work. I know he used copper wire for horse harness. Sadly all his artillery projects have gone due Photobucket pirates and deletion.but his coach has horses and is still here. BB

Thanks BB. I've been spending time looking at six horse teams and I think I now have the information I need. At least I' should be able to do a reasonable representation.
I've added some nice glossy dark brown leather harnesses to the horses. They still need another wash but they're looking better.

Left side horses.

The front horse here has the harness for the rearmost of the ridden horses.

Right side horses.

From what I've gleaned from the various sources these are in the correct positions.

I've thrown a first coat of ochre at the woodwork and done some very coarse marking out on the figures. With the four figures on the wurst I predict some heart felt anglo-saxon nouns and adjectives may stain the air blue when I progress to trying to tidy up the paintwork.

Thank you Peter.

The second wash on the horses toned down the gloss on the harness and the horses themselves I think are improved.

I'm on wood and metal bits now, the boring part.

I've decided to strip some mains electrical cable to get the traces done :-D

The figures are getting there. I've still to wash and highlight so they're a bit flat at present.

The pic clarifies the four in a row.
I thought in the first instance it is a joke. But it look like a real transport for the user of the gun.
The headgear is not well chosen for this kind of ride I think.

I remember from Revell a WW II German horse and carriage for a gun.
Two soldier sit forward and two backward. Far more comfortable as the soldiers pose show.
