Medieval troops mid 14th Century

Posted by Traveller1865 on 12 Dec 2017, 13:52

I seem to have trouble finding good figures for this period, seems manufacturers just skip this period entirely? I need knights in German and Scandinavian style and peasant levy, crossbowmen and normal infantry. Caesar makes a set for the 13th Century that seems somewhat usable, Miniarts German Knights also seem ok but they have visars, not sure they were invented in the mid 1300s? Could someone with a bit more knowledge suggest what sets would be appropriate?

Hi,
Warfare , armour and clothes did not change so fast, specially in lower layers of Society..I will give you my humble opinion as a non-specialist in the era (If you want fine accuracy here I will not be help at all :-D )

Many western european should work for knights, and for Scandinavian peasants you could take some russian militia maybe (another generic peasants can work fne for germans). Figs from early HUndred Years War should work fine for middle XIV Century. .actually late xiv-early xv c is maybe one of the best represented periods in this scale.. You have still sme mail, sobreveste, some plate elements (at least arms and legs), heater shields, still big helmets, kettle helmets..
not sure about visers , the same as you..

I think you can make a good use of several medieval sets.. Your suggested Miniart and Caesar sets (knights and foot soldiers) are a good choice, but All these seem good too in my opinion:

Thanks Carlos, I realised when after I posted a lot of those sets on PSR are probably usable, I ordered the Strelets Man-at-arms that are for correct time period http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=2477
The Zvezda sets also seem to be good but a bit large sometimes,

I'm been working on a project (will probably never be finished), the battle at Gata Skog March 1365. All of the above sets are fine, I don't have all of them, but one set for medieval civilians is the old Airfix Robin Hood set. Need a little conversion and can be a little small beside Zvezda. A lot of other discussions here, but some ideas you maybe can use. http://bennosfiguresforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1185&hilit=battle+gata

Ey Suso that's right, I had forgotten that Gata Forest project!! You had a lot of work there..
Indeed some of the Scottish hillmmen that you used there are also useable as Nordic peasants or wood hunters! (But only those with no Scottish kilts hehe)

I have the old Airfix set, maybe I can add them in the rear ranks to fill out the body of troops. In some reenactments I've seen depicting mid 14th cent battles some visors can be seen but I suspect they first appeared around 1400. Also if only there was a good set of medieval crossbowmen, the Strelets one leaves a lot to be desired...

Traveler, did you check this Valdemar set?
Not specially cheap but figs are quite good for crossbow men

Yes I saw that, too few men, and the elongated upper torsos are terrible, and they're not in action. So many faults in my eyes..

The crossbowmen at Miniarts Hussites looks quite good, well, the lying one is probably best as a casualty, but the rest. There are quite good ones from Italeri and Accurate too. Here we can see the one from Ultima Ratio: http://bennosfiguresforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=21160

I need a rather big group of crossbowmen so I would need to buy several sets, but I guess if I buy them over time it could work. Just wish there was a single set with them but maybe in the future, Strelets released an English bowmen set recently so who knows.

Just saw that the French 100 years war set by Zvezda have 12 crossbowmen, pretty good value and "problem" solved! Plus I get a lot of other useful infantry figures!

The Accurate: Men at Arms and Knights i collected in 20mm and 1/32 scale.
I must admit i have a found connection with all those old boys play toys.

It is a shame that Gunnar`s topic was ruined by those Photo Bucket Pirates! BB

Yeah the Gataskogen dio would be awesome to see, there's a fix for Chrome browser though called Chrome embed which allows you to see the missing photos: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... fnflicjjgj

The accurate figures are nice, but a bit expensive today.

The fix doesn't work anymore. Maybe someone can find a new fix. I don't think Photobucket are that fond of the fixes so that can be a reason they stop working. There was a new fix! :-D https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/photonucket%20embed%20fix?hl=en

very valuable as you get 12 figures versus Valdemars 10, though Valdemar has more poses but that set seems unavailable everywhere. Also after researching it does seem some early type of visor existed since the 1320´s in Germany so I'm not sure my first source was correct. So the figures with visors are acceptable unless some other information says otherwise.

Correct...visors are acceptable ;-)

Any other bits of armour you´re not sure about (when it came into use/fashion-went out of use/Fashion..although earlier types could be used later and some Dates aren´t 100% fixed to the date of introduction) look here:
http://military.wikia.com/wiki/Componen ... val_armour
And for contemporary cross checks (taking the artists Knowledge or lack of into account )
http://manuscriptminiatures.com/
For example on the Tags...Visors
http://manuscriptminiatures.com/4194/10229/

Basically..the list that Carlos put up will just about cover it.
