28mm Retreat from Russia Diorama

Brilliant conversions and attention to details. I love the bottles etc.

Do not forget that if you are depicting the Russian winter that exposed flesh will freeze very quickly and protection was paramount.

Also, anyone dead or dying will be a grey colour at best.

The scene from the Duelists film shows the horror of this campaign. You can literally feel the cold.

Keep up the excellent work.

Best wishes,

Chris

Thanks for that.

Much appreciated.

I tried the gray on some corpses but they did not look right?

The tragedy of this retreat was that thousands of men women and children were just not prepared for the cold and had very little suitable clothing to survive. Most of the soldiers only had their uniforms and whatever else they could scavage.

I hope to convey the hopelessness of this retreat along with the undoubted courage of the reargaurd held together by the will and leadership of Marshall Ney.

Cheers

Hi Gerry.

If it is any help I use the usual flesh colour and mix a little black in. It tends to grey the flesh.

Anyone who has felt real cold will know that you will tend to go a little blue/ grey even in Good health as the blood rushes to the core organs to protect them.

Hypothermic victims will definitely not look their best. Also flesh starts to stick to the metal, not nice.

Best wishes,

Chris

The blue that seems your trade mark Gerry, and a good one  does add to these scenes of desperation a dead certain chill of coldness that leads to me turning up my heating. BB

Hello Gerry,

thank you for the pictures.

I like your work - good conversions and painting - very realictic for the retreat.
Please tell me - what is this for a flag ?
An French eagle with a red flag ?

The flag is the Fanion of the young guard voltigures. They did not have an eagle.

Did they burn those Eagles to stop Ivan, getting them? Or just to keep warm?
It seems the snow has arrived quicker than forecast _______in a sort of United Kingdom.

Yup they burned the eagles to keep warm and stop Ivan getting them.

The snow has arrived a bit quicker as there are still a few figures to paint.

Thanks for your kind comments.

Much appreciated.

Hello Gerry.

As you will probably know I like my troops to be filthy as I feel it reflects reality.

I was wondering if your flag is perhaps too clean and tidy? Perhaps a bit of weathering and a few holes would give it a battered look?

Just a thought.

Best wishes,

Chris
