Claudius Ptolemy the geographer of 2nd Century Alexandria

Dear gents,

I have just finished a vignette for the famous scholar Claudius Ptolemy of Alexandria, who made his unbelievably accurate world map around AD 150. I'm thinking to bring this model with me in my journey to Egypt, which begins tomorrow.

Yes I think the figure is from Nicolai (I picked it up from the bunch of figures I had bought many years ago), the bear skin is sculpted with AB putty, so is the cat. The pot is a 1:50 plastic model normally used in architectural interior decoration models, with some conversion to make it look smaller.

FIGZ is for another year. I have to save money for my yearly journey.

And this is a superb vignette.
You surprise me again and again with your terrific, classic ancient European subjects.
The work on the details is so excellent, that the human figure is not getting most of the attention anymore.
Amazing how you sculpted the bear skin and the cat. Also I love the way you made those umbrella-plants and the table full of stuff.

I think Chinese people who visit Egypt buy lots of ancient looking fake souvenir like the golden statue you show us at your table. The difference between them (the hordes of tourists) and you is you already made it yourself! so you can stuff your suitcase with some real archeological findings on your return flight home.

Thanks again for your nice comments, my friends. I'm now in Petra, Jordan, and I'll post photos of the traveling Mr. Ptolemy as soon as I get home.

As for all those scrolls, I took the book <Readers of Ancient Greece and Rome> by Sir Frederic Kenyon as reference and made the scrolls with plastic rods and thin paper. The plant behind the figure is supposed to be papyrus, with the 'crest' being made with Woodland static grass.
Mr. Cryns you are right about the tourist souvenir practice. But I do want to buy some of those fake statues as soon as they allow a rework for modeling. You are also absolutely right about my real motive for travelling: fill my case with real archeological findings... unfortunately I'm not professional enough and today I found nothing but several mosaic pieces after spending the whole day under the sun of Petra.
