diorama accessories - make autumnal foliage yourself

Posted by Hellboy on 13 Nov 2016, 16:03

Hello!

I had an idea on the last walk through the autumn forest.

Why do not I make foliage in 1/72 myself?

We have autumnal leaves here in Germany at the moment just more than enough! I really only need a suitable stamp.

'autumnal foliage in 1/72'

What do you need for that?

- Round Copper Tube 2 mm
- Round Copper Tube 3 mm
- Metal files
- Tongs

Disconnect a piece from the pipe. Use the arrow to make the end pieces sharp. Get in shape with the pliers. The leaf stamp is finished!

The foliage must not be too dry, otherwise it will break. I put a paper towel under the foliage. Then punch out the leaves with the stamp. With a metal pin, the finished leaves can be pressed out of the punch.

Do you want to try it yourself? Then have fun and good succeed!!! :-D

Enjoy the photos!

Hellboy

Hi, that is a really clever idea.

I personally find real foliage, twigs etc give the best results for realism.

That looks really like a very clever idea and yields a realistic, naturally looking result. But I suppose for obtaining a larger amount it will be a somewhat tedious work.

I'm glad you like the idea. I have a long time looking for foliage in 1/72. What I found was expensive and did not convince me of the quality. The colors were simply not like 'autumn leaves'. :(

This is different now. I collect foliage with as different colors as possible. Great is also, that the colors for years not fading. And it is fun. Good music or a great audio book and go ... :-D

I have already created quite a considerable heap of foliage. All this happens faster than I myself had expected.

I put out about 10 'leafs'. Think I need 30 to 40 seconds. Then I push it out and it goes on ....

For a big autumn battlefield in 1/72, however, I would buy foliage. ;-)

I love your idea a lot. Thanks for posting. Its true it is a lot of work when making a forest. But the good part is we can choose our own leaf size.

As you may know there is a lot of commercial tools on the market to punch your own leafs in many different shapes.

Problem of the ones for the commercial market is the size. Most will be suitable for bigger scales only I think.

But the ones from Green Stuff World look small enough:

@Hellboy- Now you gave me an idea...Why can't we take a peace of paper, that is in color of leaves and do it what you did with real leaves?

The idea with the foliage stamp came to me spontaneously on a walk. I did not know that there are stamps to buy. But I believe that the leaves / foliage is too big for 1/72. After the description for the stamp of Green Stuff World he makes foliage in 1:35, 1:43, and 1:48 (54mm, 32mm, and 28mm). Whether that fits us? :( Also the price is high. 12 euro! My stamps have cost me only a little time - about 10 minutes per stamp. And it has been a lot of fun to build them! :-D

I'm starting to build a new generation of stamps. The stamps shown in the photos look like 'some' foliage. The new generation looks like a 'special' foliage - so you can see the tree species. The whole new stamp is for oak leaves. Let's see what else comes more. ..... ;-)

The idea with the paper is good :yeah: ... but I believe that my self-made tools / stamps for this are not sharp enough. :(

Why I really use real foliage is that it is available in large quantities. Furthermore, the color of the right foliage is very important to me. It just looks REAL. What is also great is that the 1/72 foliage on drying still deforms - benau like real foliage. :-D

But I will definitely try it with your suggestion!

I always thought that TK's and Uwe's dioramas have the effect of fallen leaves...They method is really practical, so I suggested one of my friends in Belgrade that for one New Years competition I make diorama in similar way...
