FIGZ 2016

Hello visitors of Figz 2016,

Here is some more info for the scratch build tree workshop.
Our plans are still flexible.

mickey mouse wrote:Count me in for the workshop

Mickey it will be possible to build trees of your own choice and interest this day.
So it is not only knowledge and skill we can share but you also can go home with some (partly or completely finished) trees you need for your own project. If you need, for example, a birch tree, just let me know and I do some preparationwork before this date. Here is some pics of my latest trees, there might be anything you are interested in in particular:

Olive

Cypres

Italian Parasol trees made of dead plants

Winter trees

Dead trees
Image

Palmtrees made of Chinese food cups or feathers

And more that has been posted before like oak, beech and wheeping willow.

If any one of you besides Mickey and Dad are interested in posessing trees like this?
I will share the secrets of making them with you at Figz2016
Just tell 'Dad' you like to join the workshop.

Zed1 you asked me once if I accept orders. I did not decide about that but if you are still interested in trees we can talk about that (don't worry, not the 500 euro's our Italian friend taxated) since you will be present this day.

I am interested as well. How long will it take and is it necessary to prepare something?

I'd like to learn making Wheeping willows, and if there's enough time, tropical trees (oak tree will be fine too). Will there be expenses for the workshop, and what might that be?

Great looking project for making tree`s I hope it goes well. My advice don`t try to run before you can walk. Meaning keep it simple to start with. Have Fun.BB

Mabo I look forward to finally meet you.

MABO wrote: How long will it take

Since you need time to meet your friends and buy some stuff during this day in the first place, the schedule for the workshop is not fixed except for the first hour where I explain about simple trees and complicated ones. Dad will inform us about starting time.

If you want to finish some simple trees using roots and plants I would say: 2 hours workshop is the minimum to finish some small poplars, cedar or shrubs. If you want to make metal wire trees I advice you to spend 3 to 4 hours but you will not finish them proper anyway since the material to cover the trunk and branches needs time to dry. But I will be there to help you all day.

MABO wrote:is it necessary to prepare something?

No, you better spend your time now finishing your Road to Arnhem vignettes.
But if more people like to join in, I might have to give you a shortlist of tools you can bring so you don't loose time waiting for someone else using my scissors or knives.

mickey mouse wrote:Will there be expenses for the workshop, and what might that be?

Mickey welcome to the workshop. I do not charge any money for my time and preparations. And I bring lots of scratch materials that are far to cheap to charge you for that. Only my glue spray and paint spray will cost some euro's so it will not be more than 5 euro's pp I think to cover expenses.

mickey mouse wrote:I'd like to learn making Wheeping willows

I will tell and show you all about that if you want to but it is by far the most time consuming tree I ever made (20 hours for the large one) as you can read here: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=18686&p=201732

mickey mouse wrote:oak tree will be fine too

Thats a much better choice if you want to go home with something looking like a tree at the end of the day.

That's good to hear. I'll have an eye on the workshop. Smaller trees and bushes are not that much of a problem, but characterful, larger trees are not my part of the story - the longer I have to invest my time in diorama equipment that doesn't even look adequate enough, the more I get upset by it.
I'll be happy to meet you, Mr.Cryns - I just have some ideas about more unusual plants and maybe you have some solutions to offer. ;-)

I would like to have a look as well but I am not sure if I am patient enough to stay there for 2 hours. I am at the FIGZ with my family and I would like to talk to a lot of people. So maybe I would have a look at the theory but not the practice ;-)

But thank you for organising.

Your trees are marvelous. I would like to make an olive tree (currently focusing on the invasion of Sicily 1943)

No, you don't have to. Dad is watching us anyhow. He knows everything.

Siegfried wrote:I would like to make an olive tree (currently focusing on the invasion of Sicily 1943

A good choice. Sicily without olives is not Sicily. It took me halve a year to find out how to make an olive look like an olive. Since I know, it is not that difficult at all.

mickey mouse wrote:Maybe there is time for a knotted willow?
:-D :o  :xd: :P ;-)
Yes, one that has just been knotted so we will be finished in 12 minutes.

Mickey Mouse we should not let our fun be undermined already by the scepsis of people who are not participating in the workshop themselves. I will show you how to make a weeping willow and bring all the stuff to do that.
