Hi all,
I had my 2nd solo game using Comitatus Late Antiquity rules. I want to familiarise myself with them so that I can teach others at the club. After my first game a couple of months ago, I felt that the Romans had an advantage. This game confirmed it!
The Romans have a weak heavy cavalry, but a strong cavalry/infantry skirmish force and 2 "brigades" of heavy infantry. The Germanic forces have an equal force of heavy infantry, an advantage in heavy cavalry, but weak skirmishing forces. This game showed that the Germans have a distinct disadvantage when facing the heavy skirmish screen. I suppose if I'd gamed it better and used the heavy cavalry in support of the infantry to negate the skirmish screen, the results could have been different, but instead I sent them on a wide flank attack where they ended up doing nothing. Maybe if I'd been a bit more aggressive with the Germanic cavalry....? Anyway, the upshot of this game was the Germanic infantry got pinged by the Roman light cavalry and infantry before they got to grips with the heavy infantry and paid dearly!
Roman archers pouring in indirect fire from behind the Roman infantry line
Roman light cavalry skirmishing with the Germanic heavy infantry
One Germanic cuneus desperately charging the closest Roman line
