Which Wargame?

Posted by MiniatureMadness on 23 Oct 2014, 19:40

Hi all!
I would like to know if you can use 1/72 minis for any wargames. I used to do warhammer but stoped because of prices and then moved to 1/72. I would like to know if there are any wargames out there that i can play using 1/72 roman era minis? It would help if they have rule books that i can find as well.

Hi,

I always feel like a sales rep for THW but you can find free start rules at that link :

http://www.twohourwargames.com/free.html

Choose Sworplay if you need to play your romans and Chain reaction if you need to play modern.

Then, if you like it, you can buy a period rule add up.

That's small group/squad level rules but take a look. It could be nice for you.

Normally You can use all kinds of rules. I simply use the suggested base sizes for 28mm models.
My preference go to rules like DBA/DBM, Fields of Glory, Hail Caesar or Impetus.
Look for Basic Impetus as this is a free set of rules and the amount of models per base is irrelevant.

Thanks Skorra, i took at look at the swordplay one but i would prefer a game where you can place many models on the board at one time, any suggestions?

Hello miniature Madness,

If you played Warhammer Fantasy, you can easily switch to Warhammer Ancient Battles (WAB) uses a similar system with 1 base = 1 fig = 1 soldier system and D6 tables for hitting-damage and so on

Of course you will not finde Wizards, Magic Items or Monsters here... (unless you adapt some rule if you wanted that)

Although the game was thought to play with historic 28 mm figs (cheaper than Warhammer fantasy, for exmaple Warlord Mins; but still expensive) you can use without any probken your 1/72 guys, rebasing as yu want

For me was a good idea :)

I would try Hail Caesar, the latest ruleset for Ancients from Rick Priestly

WAB, Kings of War with the historical army lists, Crusader, Hail Caesar, these are the ones I can recommend.

Are you planning on playing against a human opponent or playing solo? If solo then DBA2 or Basic Impetus would be good sets and both available for free online.

Use your Warhammer figures with HOTT rules, make up elements using sabot bases.

DBA is what brought me into ancient gaming with 1/72 plastics, basing 60mm wide; base depth requires some flexibility as the rules have depths which are plainly ridiculous. Base depth is best judged from the size of the figures, rather than attempting to stick to what the rules say, e.g. all my infantry are on 60x30. There are variations on DBA and HOTT for all periods up to modern era, a visit to the Fanaticus site has all the info needed.

As far as lots of figures is concerned, Big Battle DBA is available.

DBA adapts to solo play pretty well, that's how I use it myself. A new board on DBA solo has recently opened at Fanaticus, so you aren't alone (playing solo you are, oh, you know what I mean!) One thing though, I would start at the standard size army in the beginning and expand as rule familiarity grows.

Two possibilities:
1. Buy latest version (3.0) which means the old version (2.2) should be going cheap around the place.
2. Download The Unofficial Guide to DBA UPDATED FOR v2.2+ from http://www.wadbag.com/DBAGuidePlus/. (2.2+ has added a few things which players wanted.) This is a plain English version of the rules. A common criticism is that the way the rules are written, they can be difficult to interpret. This is a better option than laying out cash for something you might not take to.

Failing that, Basic Impetus is a free download http://www.dadiepiombo.it/images/stories/dp/basic2.html
