WWI 100th Anniversary Group Build: On the March

Posted by vellek on 21 Jan 2014, 18:11

For the Group Build I've taken various poses in my 1/72 collection to create a scene of German infantry marching to the front in 1914. Here are the players:

And here are the poses:

The middle row is already painted? Yep, that would be back in 1975 by yours truly!

The Airfix WWI boxes  are a classic, but the new productions, Zvezda first, are top notch!
I will follow you with interest!

Competing with the snowstorms, NFL playoffs, and household chores has been tough on this project. Here are some updates:

HaT's German wagons: easy to build, a little glue here and there. Will probably only need one in the dio.

All the marching figures have been assembled, undercoated, and de-flashed. I added in a dog, too.
Image

The road: Sculptee, one coat of paint and another of glue, ink, water and dirt. Try finding dirt in New York in winter! Twigs to make blasted trees will have to wait until Spring. More details, paint, and some spotty grass to follow.

And here's where it's heading...

More updates as progress is made!
Cheers,
Kurt

It looks awesome Kurt... I plan to do something similar but with Napoleonic Austrians.
And I would like to see all of your wagons painted.

BTW, what do you use for undercoat? Spray paint?

Thanks Guys.

Yes, it's spray paint. For the hard plastic I use Testor's matte black enamel, and for HaT's softer figures I use Liquitex ebony spray acrylic. HaT advises against using enamel paint on their figs as it might promote plastic rot. I myself prefer the enamel spray because it's easier to find in the shops and doesn't jam up the nozzle.

Excellent start of your project Kurt! Like the composition!

Maybe a little tip for the destroyed trees. Why don't you use thyme? I think that's very usefull for what you want to make! ;-)

Slow going here with the weather still chilly, and the interior of the house badly in need of repainting. I'll spare you pics of the new and improved bathroom and daughters' bedroom. Here are some of the various marching Germans of the "38th"; still in need of buttons, dulcotte, skin highlights, packs, weapons, touch-ups, etc., etc.,

Well Mates, after a long delay and a loss of painting space I have finally completed my GB project. Sorry for the time lapse.
