Paint Brand - Best paints for 15mm figs?

Posted by JohnnyRockets on 09 Aug 2012, 14:40

Hi, I really only have experience with Vallejo Game Color Paints.

I'm wondering is there a better paint out there for 15mm painting?

Preferrably a brand that is available in the US.

To be honest I think Vajello are the best though I have heard good things about the Army painter paints that have recently been released

there shouldnt be any difference between painting 15mm and any other scale in my opinion

Save yourself money and get down the Hobby/art shop
Best range of colours;
Marabu (it´s available in the US) Cheap and they have real colour names

Marabu´s Acrylic Anthracite Laquer is excellent for metal effects. If you can get it Hobbyline. Failing that Windsor and Newton Acrylics (thier yellow is good) but basically all of them are available on Amazon ;-)

Paul,

Okay, so what you're saying it that the other hobby paints are kind of "overrated" and "over priced"? In your opinion.

That statement is not meant to offend anyone or start a "what paint is better war", just trying to understand what you're implying Paul.

I tend to agree with you on this...

I will try out the Marabu, Hobbyline and/or Windsor and Newton Acrylics, they are readily available for me near my home, so that is really great.

Do you mix these paints with water at all? Many of these are "tube paint" and fairly thick. I think...

I should add I suppose that while I use mostly Vajello, when it comes to black and white I do buy the big tubes of Acrylic paint from the art stoe as I use a lot of both those colours so buying the Vajello ones just makes it expensive

I don't think that W&N acrylics are cheapest option. :-)

How come?
Vallejo
http://shop.plastikmodellcenter.de/xtco ... 1c6fceb625
Price per 100ml 14.70€
W&N
https://www.kreativ.de/shop/unser-angeb ... fen-28481a
Price per 100ml: 10,91 €
Get the bigger pots /tubes474ml at 22, 40€ (which you can´t with Vallejo) and the price sinks to per 100ml: 4,74 €..
Roughly the same is true with Marabu and Hobbyline.
The same amount of vallejo would cost 70€
And if one learns to mix colours; ie; Red, yellow, blue, black and white the bigger amounts are perfectly feasable.

15mm being your thing, have a look at this site, these guys are more or less exclusively 15mm (ancient/medieval mainly). It's also an American site, so very relevant to your good self :-D

Hello Paul!

Thanks for explaining and you are absolutely right. But I do not consider Vallejo as cheap too :-D
When I said that I was comparing with acrylics like Agama or Pactra which I can buy for 1€/10 mL.
To be honnest I don't know price of W&N colors in my country.
:-D

Hi everyone!

I bought some nice Liquitex paints over the weekend.

The seem to be good paints, at least from my limited experience! ;-)

I was able to get 36, 22ml tubes for about $20 US.

So it was a good deal.

They seem decent, but I'm still learning how to best use them.

The W&N available at my local shop, were just too big of tubes, so I went with the Liquitex.

Thanks for everyone's advice, I appreciate it.

Thought so ;-)
Thing is..it turns out a lot of the gaming paints, the ones that come in little pots, have weird names and cost a fortune are no better, and in some cases worse than the so called hobby paints sold that are generally considered only good enough for covering a 2D canvas.
A lot of them are also made in the same factories as the hobby paints..ok..different blending etc but the basic ingredients are the same.
Obviously there are some dreadfull paints in hobby stores..the really cheap "beginners" paints but even these can be "upgraded" to give a good finish. ;-)
