Roman Trireme scratchbuilt (UPDATE 07.10.13)
Next to my other dioramas I´m working on a Roman Bireme for a sea-fight-diorama. First I´ve thought about the battle at actium where Octavian destroyed the fleet of Anthony and Cleopatra. But I think it will be boring to paint only dozens of Romans, so I had to look for another Roman sea-battle... well... there´s not much. The result is that I´ll create a dio of the battle at Mylae...

Hmmm... Seems that you´re right. I´ve got a book from Andrea Press (http://www.weltbild.de/media/ab/2/025213042-bireme.jpg) with a diorama of the battle at mylae. The two ships shown there are a Bireme for the romans and a simple galley with just one row of oars for the carthaginians. But it won´t be a problem to add a third row of oars at the ship...

Yes, very nice built. The vessel with its outriggers seems rather like a Hemiola than a Bireme, so I would say it will work as a 4.- 1. cent. BC Ship.
It looks great but if you want to have a historic accurate model you shouldn't fix a tower or assault bridges with such small ships. Another problem are the rowmen, with a flat close deck the would choke....I know an open deck, the problem with the rowers figures and so on - i've the same problem...
