1:72 KNIL 1935-1942

Posted by Maurice on 08 Mar 2009, 22:50

A while ago I bought a model of a Vickers Mk IIIB Light Tank (Retrokit), also known as the "Commercial Dutchman", of which a few dozen served in Dutch East Indies before WWII.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a couple of suitable figures that could pose for KNIL soldiers to go with the little tank. Doesn't matter if they are plastic, metal or resin, any will do, as long as they are scale 1:72.

Thanks in advance for the help :-)

The first set that springs to mind is the Hat ww1 anzac set. But I think the dutch used diferent amo pouches, and Mausers instead of lee enfields. you could get some SHQ dutch 1939 and some ww1 or 2 australians (for the hats)

Hey Maurice, this is the set Christiaan means:

http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=435

or the last row of these ones:

http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=501

or

http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=241

I can spare some of these if you want (figures marked more as one)

and maybe these ones:

Looking at google you find lots of information, did you try that. I looked at KNIL and pictures (more as 16000 hits).
Hope this helps you!

Greetings Peter

Hey thanks for the imput both, you've steered me in the right direction.

Christiaan, I think you're right about the WWI Anzac's, they seem most suitable, except for the rifles (would it really be visible at 1:72, the difference between enfields and mausers?) and the pouches (which can be fixed with some green stuff and a knife I think).

I am not sure about the SHQ figures, they are nice, but I don't like the sculpting of the faces and hands, they look somewhat caricatural to me.

Were KNIL uniforms actually the same as European Dutch uniforms?

Peter, natuarlly I've searched Google for KNIL, and found many images and information (saved many images and even whole websites to my documents on the old pc). But that is what left me with the problem of what figures to use, as there are none

As far as the WWII Anzac's are concerned, the look great (even with the wrong rifle) and the pouches seem more correct than the WWI, it is the lower legs that wrong, as the KNIL had straps around the legs, same as the European Dutch army.

So about your offer, that be a very interesting offer, it's just that the lower legs are wrong if they want to pose for KNIL soldiers (leg straps) and that would be hard to fix with a knife and green stuff ;-) but I'll think about it, because those Matchbox figs look great, best of all the Anzac sets.

diferences between rifle types are obvious even in 1/72, as long as the sculpting is clear.
You should try the sites of the Leger museum in Delft and Museum Bronbeek in Arnhem, maybe they can help on the question on the uniform.

Cheers,

Christiaan

The WWII rifles look much more like the mauser in this scale, just be sure to trim off the small box magazine in front of the trigger guard[

Thanks both, I'll give it a try.

I also found a small white metal figures producer yesterday evening with a set of 3 KNIL soldiers (2 privates and an officer) in its range, sent him a mail asking for what period these are and if he has them in stock :-D

Try this one:

It's not really KNIL, but surely Dutch
