Officers Mess

Watch out for spammers!!!!!!

Posted by west1871 on 14 Jan 2012, 08:12

Hello all,

As you are all aware we have had a few unwelcome guest's lately, we are on it and ejecting them with extreme prejudice :-D

Do not post in their threads. Do not follow any links, we don't want anyone getting any crappy viruses, how ever tempting that penis enlargement patch or miracle hair grow tonic is

Its a bit like the film "Zulu" at the moment,"Spammers, thousands of 'em" , I removed six posts myself in the last day, so just report them and we will do the rest :-D

Cheers Rich.

Maybe something can be done at registration level, to complicate it a bit just to deceive the bots.

Word verification only works against computers. There is already a built in verification that works better than CAPTCHA, and is more user friendly.

The people who spam here are actual people posting posts. Most of them are cheap SEO companies that get paid to do link building (post as many links on as many websites to get a higher rating in Google's search results).

Wouldn't impaling be preferable, that would provide the higher viewpoint too. :-D :winky:

On that thought, is there a medieval figure of impalement? :-D

Known spammer Vardan Kushnir has been found dead in his Moscow apartment, having apparently been beaten to death about the head.

The case is being treated as murder though no motive has yet been established, according to reports citing the public prosecutions office of Moscow's central district.

As such it is too early to say whether the attack was related to Kushnir's spamming activities but in the past his operation has been subject to a number of revenge attacks - though nothing so serious as the apparent attack which has now left him dead.

Kushnir ran the Center for American English in Moscow and a history of spamming activities had previously raised the ire of many web users.

In July 2003, Russia's deputy communications minister, Andrei Korotkov, became so incensed about the volumes of spam he was receiving he instigated a denial of service attack against the school's phone system.

Korotkov claimed he was receiving 40 emails per day prior to setting up an automated calling system which bombarded the school's phone line with messages urging them to stop sending out illegal email marketing.

In Russia, they hate spammers so much they actually kill them
