Mighty Oaks

Posted by Susofrick on 07 Jun 2016, 08:38

Mr Cryns wanted to see some oak trees. Maybe he wanted to see model ones, but living close to a little (very small) oak forest I can show some live ones. To not drown the forum with pics I have awakened THE BLOG! http://gataskog.blogspot.se/2016/06/some-oak-trees.html again. :affraid:

Not at all. I wanted to see real Swedish oaks. At age thirteen I made a two-week canoe trip in Värmland. I remember pines, birches and lots of blåbär.
So I was curious what kind of oaks grow near your house.

That is in fact why I asked for your google earth coördinate so I can have a look from above. But the name of your village or area will do as well if you want to keep your privacy. Since most Swedes live in the south, you probably do too.

So thanks for the BLOG and what catches my eye is most of these oak trees have very little lower branches but grow all the way up to reach the sunlight before splitting up in branches, twigs and leafs.

Thanks.

Hello and Moinmoin,
I am sorry but these trees seem to be 5 to 10 times smaller than the oak trees that stand along the small roads here in Schleswig Holstein in northern Germany. When you measure around the tree you need 5 to 8 meters around. These are mighty oaks.
Kind regards
Patrick

Dear DerkleinePUC,

I have no doubts you are right in that. But Sweden has another climate than Northern Germany. This has its repercussion on trees. For your eyes these Swedish oaks may look like thin poles. But in the perception of a Swedishman, such oaks can be mighty.

But as you understand:
You have to post your 5 to 10 times bigger Schleswig oaktree pictures here right now!

Cool! I live in Västerås (no, NOT Westeros, just pronounced the same way). About 130.000 people here so I think I can keep all privacy I need. :-D And these are pretty young oaks, not more than 100 years old.

How to recognize different types of trees from quite a long way away?
