New Project 54mm AWI

Posted by PaulRPetri on 13 Jul 2025, 16:33

Not sure how this project got started as I had just begun an American Revolutionary War project in 1/72 scale but somehow the 54mm bug took hold of me.

Since it is the 250th anniversary of the war the Seven Years War Association, really the convention next April, we are planning to devote much attention to the revolution. With that in mind and a whim to do something a bit different I have started a Battle of Trenton and the Battle of Princeton project. I plan on these being "Toy Soldier" type battles with individually mounted figures.

Needing at least 10 buildings for Trenton and seeing the average cost of a 54mm building about $85 plus shipping I decided to make my own from foam core and chipboard.

These photos show the basic construction. I used the chipboard to cut strips and basically used that to make the wood planking. Not hard but very time consuming.

I used plastic strips that I bought to make the window glass frames. Not hard but again time consuming.

So I decided to make a stone building just using the foam core. Much fasted but a bit unstable.

For roads I had some crummy for lying around so I cut that to size, used packing tape on the bottom to give it some rigidity and use what we call spackle hear in the USA to make the road surface.

For troops I am keeping this project on a more economical level so I have been buying BMC figures which are really kids toys.
Simple block painting the painting on the dreaded "Dip" stain process.

Well that is it for now I have made some progress today will try to be better uploading some images.

Your redcoats look magnificent Paul. I think your buildings will have much more character and be more satisfying to create from scratch like you are. Besides, that's the revolutionary spirit - making do with what you have on hand. Many firearms carried by Continental troops were made in home workshops. Your 1/72 projects will still be waiting for you like old friends.
Cheers,

Norm Abram used to make it look so easy!

The buildings look great, and the figures look pretty good too!

Interesting stuff and the troops look pretty good for ‘toy soldiers’.

It is a pity about their faces though .

Why do manufacturers do blobs for noses etc?

The house looks very representative of the period.

Lovely.

Best wishes,

Chris

Thanks for the kind comments Chris. Yes the faces on the figures are generally bad and a few of them have very flat parts with no detail at all. Probably to get them out of the mold easier.

That is a very nice looking project. You got my attention. ;-)

I have some BMC figures, but not from this period. Mine are from ACW and WW2. I agree about the details on them.

Better get some ACTA or ACCURATE (REVELL) figures for your project.

Hi Peter thanks for the kind comments.

I have 60 Accurate militia getting ready for priming soon!
I have 20 BMC grenadiers painted already that I have to take a photo of. ACTR figures are nice but kind of pricey for my Toy Soldier project.

Whatever it was you used on the roof, it's a good representation of wood shakes.

Loving this.

Thanks for the comment Steve! Believe it or not this roofing material I used is a gardening product here in the USA used for wrapping young tree trunks! Not my original idea and I have had this stuff for over 20 years I hope it is still made. It comes in rolls.
