Work in Progress

The Asterix scratch building project.

Beware your references, Paul! That's not a picture by Uderzo! ;-) Great work and I think your palisade looks much better than the one in the picture! Great to see that the work is going forward and we can hope to see a finished village some time in the future!

Thanks Gunnar, for the friendly warning about that picture my friend, and your bright enthusiasm for my ongoing hobby work.

Thank`s to all you other guys looking in from time 2 time too.

For arguments sake it is always good to mention alternative materials like, odd wooden sticks collected out in the wilds for free could be collected and used for any such work.Micro- wave them for 3 seconds to kill off anything nasty lurking there. :sst: " you would never wish your house to be eaten by wood mites?"____ :read: "I object!" cried out the hungry Book Worm.
( ;-) my latest tiny book," THE BITE OF THE BOOK MITE".)

At half the price of balsa, hard wood dowels are good to use but cutting the points is much more harder to do. I guess OK for younger ones, but not i. ;-) These dowels can be wire brushed to good effect before construction, as is the balsa, and the look will be greatly improved with both paint and color-washes applied.

Just a little taste of illusion above. I believe in your imagination,
it makes the magic of fantasy become reality. :-D BB

Thank you Remco,i can`t admit to working fast,
but while i am awaiting materials in the mail.
The paper card inside supports for a few buildings can be mapped out,
cut,and stuck down, and later arranged in order to construct more roofs.
Although no more Hemp ones,______________been there and done and dusted that. :-D BB

With the interior A Frames ship shaped into wood beaming fashion over the past few days,it is now time to reveal the stone fronts below that will be used for this new building for the Asterix Village.

Image

It was way back in January 2017 that i began to formulate the patterns needed to make my castings. Although i did have a little help.
So now is the time to fully construct the wooden roof. :-D BB

It just needs dressing up with sand and stone now and painting. BB

Dollops of thick white glue and heaped up kiln dried sand makes a perfect rough and ready base.
This little first off sample is ideal for 20mm or 1/72 scale figures too. For this project i need to create a more meaty style of wattle, thicker like gabion baskets to edge around the place. `The Plant Tie Wire', worked out quite remarkable well ,and i can highly recommend it for war gaming bases for all those who like making their own unique stuff. Cocktail sticks certainly are worth having in ones stash. ;-)

Image

Thank you for commenting PhilC, very kind of you.
i guess i am highly skilled when given wire and glue and sand to scatter about the place.
All i have to do is try and clear up before Mrs B,awakes in the morning. We have stone floors down stairs and fine dried sand is very slippery under foot, rather like ice to step upon. BB :-D

"See Dear, another piece in BB`s jigsaw?"

Image

A double sided wattle fence that took a while to figure out how best to go about it. The size is spot on.Several of these will skirt around the buildings and therefore blend in.
I just finished applying an overall of white glue and i will fill the cavity later with paper topped off with stone stuck well into glue. The base will be dressed with more sand and stone. Then when all is dried hard and staying put,it will be undercoated in dark brown all over, and dry brushed later.
Grass and weedy plants will finish of both the top and base.

The actual work seems simple enough to do,but above is Plan C. With the sticks stuck good and hard into holes I proceeded to wattle weave one side only and not go round and around the piece. With the first side finished i worked a weave wattle on the other side. Then taking a length of wire i worked it through each end in an under and over rough tough affair, that finished the entire wiring to my liking.

Plan A, worked well as a single sided fence.
:-D However i needed depth and more to the point more height.

Plan B, started well but working both sides at the same time cause to much of a pulling in for the sticks, then this in turn caused the base to splinter into halves. :eh: :eh: :eh: :eh: :eh:

So i am very glad Plan C,worked out well in the end. :-D
There will be several fences within the palisade walls of the village.

Many could use solid wood and nails to do a good job,
but i wanted to wonder down my own amusing pathway.
An entertaining stroll of self learning new things.to pass on.

The 24 A Frames, are all cut out,and stuck together to make eight solid supports! So each will be scribed out and painted before sticking them into the roof.

Image

Placing the casting on top of the A Frame reveals...

Image

... that one will be able to view a peep right through the windows of the intended building once made complete. Allowance for an upper floor to be installed was also calculated way back in January. So time being what it is finally the Roof will be this weeks intended hobby work.
:-D See You later.BB

I throw sometimes a view to your long time project.
And be always impressed by the ideas, size , amount and time you spend for it.
:yeah:

Figures, houses, walls (trees too?) do you see a light of the finished village ?

Hi guys yesterday was spent making these, plus weaving and sanding the bases on these quick and easy fences. The cost including the plastic string and balsa board around about £2.00 UK Stirling.

Image

Before attempting new things my advice is ,`It always pays to do a sample', as that is the self taught teaching system we all have within us. It avoids costly mistakes especially in scratch building.

My sample was to small a size in height,so those that followed along my production line were duly upgraded in size, with the weaved wattle left matted wind blown with see through gaps in a most intentional untidy style.

Image

The little blue fellow raising his hat,is from the second Lucky Luke collection produced in a smaller size. It is not a 3D printed version, but part of a rare collectors item made by Dargaud in 1978. BB

BEGINNING THE A FRAME ROOF

This will have a balsa wood roof

Image

It`s 14 X 11 inches

Image "That`s one crazy size BB!"

:coffee: It might seem so but it will shrink given time.

Image

The middle was marked out on both sides. The top line on the other side is to be scored lightly with my craft knife but carefully not to cut right through. This forms the fold. Horizontal lines were marked out square across the piece. These are guides for the A Frames when the folding and gluing up begins.

Image

The casting for one end. These will be stuck into place using silicone.

Image

One scribed A Frame. It and all the rest are to be painted and dry brushed before fixing into this roof.

Image

They each go into place guided by the line. PVA Glue will be used to stick these into place.

Image

It is the simplest way to create a strong style roof.

Image

The easy Apex fold hinges to form the slopping roof top.

Image

An illustration fold seen here. The front ends will be 8 inches across the bottoms.
After painting a sticking into place is all dried out,the balsa wood rooftop will begin.

Image

All painted. There is enough for two buildings.

Image

Now for dry brushing!

Image

All those hard pressed in pen lines were well worth doing.

Image

Up really late during the night means that i will be able to stick these into place today. BB

These sleep in the white tower which is basically a storage box. However these are painted a few years ago. How time fly`s away. There are masses more to paint at a future time. BB

Peter, yes the work continues, and this is scratch building number 5.
Which will hopefully have surprises as it all goes together.

The stone Forge Base and walls will slip into tidy place either side of the main long house.
