Hi gerry, this diorama would make a heck of a good snowy feature to view on the day Christmas is being celebrated by the masses.Much better than rubbish TV. Great figures. You are doing your topic proud with your determination to continue to paint. BB

Beano Boy

Thanks for that.

I hope to have it finished before Christmas but I just find more figures to paint or convert.

I really must stop and get on with the groundwork.

Cheers

There you have it in a nut shell Gerry. One paints fantastic figures and then more rich blessing pop out of the moulding machines, and of course one rattles the money one has available and say," Yes i think i can afford some more, after all these look rather spiffy nice."
I guess all authors are thus this way inclined?

Often is the case my nights flow away in mere passing reflective words, that come in fancy free, but also have a cost.______Zzzzzzzzzzz, Sleep where is your pillow? ;-) BB

I am curious how the project develops further. Sorry Gerry, I am missing still the cold snow of Russia besides the ground-plates. The figures are looking still too healthy and in a good condition. Some applications of Green Stuff or other materials to show improvised clothing and coldness-protections would been a thinkable possibility. Some cuts in the existing clothing would bee too possible....

Thanks for looking and taking the time to comment.

Much appreciated.

I still have to weather most of the figures with snow ect. This I will do when I place them in their final positions on the dio.

I have a lot of ragged figures but I have also included some not so ragged as during the retreat there were troops in various stages of scrufiness as they picked up more troops along the way which had been left to gaurd the supply routes or garrison a town and were in a better condition than the ones that left Moscow.

The gaurd were in a better condition than most troops for most of the retreat as they got better food and billets.

Cheers

Finaly I have started to work on the base of the diorama.

For my base I chose the largest pin board I could find with a cork facing.

I marked on the facing the rough layout of the diorama then I masked off the wood side boards. I then gave the cork a coat of PVA glue to seal It as I will be using watered down PVA with my snow.

I then gave the board a brown coat of paint. I then cut some foam as I wanted two raise forest areas. I glued this in position and also gave them a coat of brown pain . I then positioned some stones from the garden randomly around the diorama.

Once this had all dried I placed my trees and other bits and pieces and then started on the snow.

The diorama has a long way to go yet but I have included some pictures of it thus far.

Cheers

Gerry

Hi Gerry,

This project is starting to look like something very special indeed.

You can feel the cold emanating from the diorama and your pictures look lovely.

I personally do not like to see cannon balls with cannon as the ammunition was generally pre packed but nevertheless a masterpiece in the making.

Best wishes,

Chris

Chris

Thanks for that.

Much appreciated.

The cannon balls are taken from a contemporary etching from the Soldier Faber du Faur who took part in the retreat. This shows abandoned cannon surounded by cannon balls.

Thanks for that much appreciated.

Apparently the Cossacks made a great show of charging but very rarely charged home when confronted by resistance.

I have now finished placing all the figures into position on the diorama but have still a lot of work to do with the groundwork and still have flotsam and jetsom to attach.

I have run out of snow material and will now have to wait until more arives in the post.

Ah well needed a break.

Cheers

Gerry
