Question: making horse reins

Posted by renikart on 29 Jun 2016, 15:17

I'm working on a new 1/16 scale model. This time it's the French Cuirassier from miniart.

It's coming along nicely (try to add some progress pics asap) but I can't seem to find a good tutorial to make the horse reins. Does anyone has experience with that and would you care to give me some advice? Would be much appreciated! I've got some ideas, but not really sure if they will work out...

Thanks,
Renik

That's perfect Paul! Thanks a lot. Seems I don't know how to properly use the search feature on this forum :affraid:

If you can find lead foil it could be very useful. There is also masking tape as really cheap and easy to find solution.

Are those easy to paint Kekso? I would like to have a rigid end result.

I Think they sell those at a hobbyshop nearby. Thanks Pieter!

I made those reins with masking tape. Please note that I used masking tape that is more paper like, not "plastic" tape such as Tamiya.
I haven't tried to paint tin lead foil. But some figure producers (like Polish M Model) are supplying tin lead foils with their figure kits. So, I think there shouldn't be a problem to paint it after good primer.

Thanks kekso! For now I'll try the stripstyrene Pieter showed. They sell those at a shop nearby and have a huge amount of different sizes. I found a perfect fit and also found one that could be used as crossbelt for the cartridge-pouch. The belt wasn't included and I really like it to be on the model. If I find the time I'll post some progress pics.

Here's a brief update, mainly because I always forget to make pictures when I'm busy... (which is pretty crucial when posting in 'work in progress').

It's coming along very nicely, although some modifying is necessary. I really wanted to add the crossbelt with the cartridge pouch. The pouch is supplied with the set, accept for the belt. I used the broad strips from stripstyrene. I'm really happy with the way it came out!

I also noticed there was no sabre guard. Again, not included. I used some metal wire to construct the guard. After some fiddling around I finally got the result I was looking for (see attached).

Next up: Painting the horse

Amazing face painting and great job on saber guard. I also like that matte finish/patina on metal parts.
One question: is it possible to cut/damage cuirass in that way?

Good point, don't think so either. I already adjusted it to a more realistic dent. The dark base and strong edges make it look like a very deep cut. A sabre, lance or bayonet could scratch it, but not that deep.

Very good paintjob and great work on the sabreguard...
I think the damage to the cuirass is a nice touch...
Keep it going,..!

Your painting and modifications are great !

Concerning the cuirass, maybe it should be bent a little under the strength of the hit.

here are two of my (bad) photos of cuirrass from the Franco-Prussian War... both officers died at Reichshoffen on the 6th of August 1870...and the second was deheaded by a prussian shot during his charge with his regiment !

Thanks Chris! Confronting to see the damage to the cuirasses in those days. That reminds me of the cuirass from carabinier Antoine Fauveau who was hit by a cannonball at Waterloo.

You're welcome !
It's true that the fauveau cuirass is quite impressive, this back view is interesting :
