A tenth anniversary ... in space

Posted by sberry on 01 May 2026, 12:06

In 2016, I presented my first Romans In Outer Space adventure here, and a little later, a little movie followed.

Now, ten years later, I've completed another diorama in this series (pictures will follow soon) and am planning another short film. Thanks to advances in AI, digital possibilities exist today that weren't available ten years ago. Therefore, I ventured a first small experiment with AI-based video creation.

The idea is this: Before the Roman space marines can enter the oracle cave, they logically first have to reach the planet with their spaceship. That's why I wanted a short video sequence with their flying spaceship as an intro.

First, you need a planet; I chose this photo of Pluto:

And for that, you need a beautiful, magnificent sky; here we see the Cat's Paw Nebula:

The raw image of the spacecraft, from a 360° rotation series I took in 2016:

After removing the background and the legs, it looks like this:

And with a bit of digital magic on the rocket engines:

The overall image is:

So far, everything was conventional photography with some digital picture manipulation – no AI involved at all.
In the final step, I fed that image, along with the text "A spaceship flies over a rocky planet" into PromeAI's image-to-video editor.
The result, achieved without any major adjustments to settings, etc., looks like this:

I have to say, I find this quite impressive for such a relatively simple experiment.

Mindblowing is all i can say. It`s incredible how so much of this AI stuff can be identified as such at first glance. For me this looks REAL. Well done and can`t wait to see more....

Looks fantastic! And notice the shadow on the planet when the ship comes over! :yeah:

I'm not a big fan of AI when i see some creations on FB (horses with three legs for example), but this looks perfect to me. I don't see any silly things and that is how it has to be! Great job Stephan! ;-)

Wow, Stephan, and you call that a simple experiment? From the way you describe it, it doesn’t sound simple to me at all. That said, it’s incredibly creative and the result is nothing short of spectacular. :notworthy:  :notworthy:  :notworthy:

Having seen all the finished elements separately, I was really looking forward to seeing the pictures of the finished diorama. But now, thanks to you, I’m also really looking forward to seeing the final video you’re going to make.

Very well done, my friend. ;-)

Santi.
