Conquistadores, Guanches and Tlaxcalans for DBA

Posted by blacksmith on 09 Dec 2025, 23:17

Howdy, I've been busy lately and I've just finished painting three DBA armies, Conquistadors for the conquest of the Canary Islands with Guanches to defend them, as well as the army of Hernán Cortés in the New World to fight the Aztecs of a friend of mine.

The Guanches are commission that a friend did for me. The miniatures are 28mm Neanderthals from Atlantic Wargames downscaled to 15mm and tuned in many aspects. Conquistadors and Tlaxcalans are both from Red Copper.

I wrote an interesting article about Guanches and their weaponry and how I did my army in my blog that may interest you: https://javieratwar.blogspot.com/2025/10/guanche-army-canary-islands-for-dba-30.html

As always, those 15mm DBA armies are spectacular, Javier. My favourites are the Guanches, a spectacular conversion from Neanderthals. I imagine the general will be one of the menceyes of Tenerife (I have fond memories of their statues in the 'Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias' in Candelaria during a holiday there several years ago).

Thanks for the link to that article, Javier. It has allowed me to learn a lot more about the Guanches, which I have added to what I already learned during my visit to Tenerife in 2019. I brought back a couple of books on the history of the conquest of Tenerife/the Canary Islands and lots of pictures, such as these of the Museum of the Guanches in Icod de los Vinos and the castles of San Miguel in Garachico and San Felipe in Puerto de la Cruz. ;-)

Hi Santi,
Somehow I missed your last comment. I've been to Tenerife a few times but never visited that museum, shame on me.
I've been thinking about playing the battle or slaughter of Acentejo in Tenerife. Maybe some day.

Hello Blacksmith Javier,
beautifully painted figures at display. Never came across Guanches before, very exotic. The way you paint them they seem to come from "the North" and not from the African continent. Astonishing to me that they were a trouble to fight ; their technology seems fairly less developed than Conquistadores.
Great read and many good contributions
Greetings
Michael
