28mm Diorama "The Army of Florence 1260"

Posted by T. Dürrschmidt on 24 Feb 2018, 16:56

Hello,

several years ago I had started this diorama projekt. After years of "I must finish this someday" the day has finally come. :-D

The Army of Florence on it´s way to the battle of Montaperti (which they lost). Main part of the diorama is a "Carroccio" (flag wagon) and a "Martinella" (bell wagon). They were used as rally and signal point for the troops and they served also as a mobile church service platform. The two wagons are towed by giant white Oxen, called Chianiara, the hugest cattle in the world, still raised today. The wagons are accompanied by knights, foot soldiers and a baggage train.

The diorama is one meter long and weights tons because of the intense use of pewter wagons and figures.

I apology for the unlikeness of Bavaria in winter and Tuscany in summer. ;-)

Hope you enjoy it.

Regards Thomas

I really like how you combined diorama, sunlight and real background.

A very nice composition, painting and lovely choice of background in my opinion.

The emblems are lovely.

I have been investigating railway modelling backgrounds. A range called ID Premium back scenes featuring photographic quality seem the best with a good range. We shall see.

Great scene, finely detailed and skillfully painted. :yeah:

Could you please identify the figures you used?
The wagons are scratchbuilt I guess?
Oxens and dogs as well?

Impressive achievement anyway.

Thank you for the comments.

Nearly the whole figure range (including wagons and oxen) on this diorama is made of pewter and sold by Mirliton/ Italy. I did some conversions with Perry and Fireforge heads and added a few parts or figs from Fireforge, Old Glory and Perry.
To be honest, it was a real pain to build the carroccio. Parts were missing, the wagon was too heavy for the wheel suspension. The figures have several parts and they don´t fit together very well. The knights didn´t fit the horsebacks. . So it took litres of tears, sweat and superglue to get it done. :eh:

Nevertheless it is a very good and historical correct figure range. OK, you will have to do some additional work but this is OK, if the result is good.

I am very glad the artist persevered and completed this brilliant project, despite significant and frustrating difficulties. The end result is simply tremendous! The shadow you painted on the side of the wagon is perfectly shaped and to scale!

But what's the answer to the really important question?

Are there holes in those trumpets?

You got me. Cannons are easier to drill than conic trumpets. :xd:

It seems that your project was a kind of torture for you, but the results are absolutly astonishing and convincing. I like it to take themes of less know periods and conflicts. And I like still more conversions which you have achieved in high numbers and quality in this project.

I am missing only some dirt and dust, but it´s my pure personal belief when I am seeing a muddy road.....
