Did their guild require the Dutch navigators of the period to wear distinctive hats?

:yeah: I don't know. I do not think so. This was a period of much transition in fashion. Its the change from late renaissance to early barock. Many different types of hats and caps were in use.

Here is the latest Dutch sailor fashion for 1585 which I used or my HOURGLASSMAN.

One of the cool things with Benno's is that we've always had great sculptors among the members. And still do!

In coöperation with Michel Vogt (painting) and Dirk Risser (Photography) Crynsminiaturen presents its first set of WATERGEUZEN late Renaissance sailors for the early years of the protestant Dutch Revolt against Catholic Spain 1566-1590:

Set DR-001 SAILORS IN THE MAST

Hello Mr Cryns,
these new Seegeuzen projects are wonderful - love the intricate sculpts. It is developing quite quickly I see. Just like Mabo I would like to see it all come together with a ship.
Greetings
Michael

Dear Mabo and Michael Robert,

Thank you for your nice words and questions about ships fitting the period and place.
The 1:72 scale shipmodelkit that fits this period best is The Golden Hind by Airfix which is a classic but still available for a very good price and easy to build.
The 1:72 Mayflower by Trumpeter is, though a bit too late in timescale, a shipmodel that fits the late 16th century well.
All ships used by Columbus, like Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria, though late medieval in design, will still fit this later period and are small, affordable and easy to build. Heller has one in 1:75, Revell in 1:90, Dusek as a 1:72 wooden kit.

I have the plan to make one or more small Dutch ships that are typical for the period 1566-1590. These are coasters and inlandships called Beurtschip, Wijdschip or Waterschip for example. Usually they have only one mast. During the Dutch Revolt they were equipped as warships with wooden shelter screens and small naval guns. But thats for later.

Graeme wrote:Can I suggest that for the Napoleonic period that any figures climbing the shrouds should have their hands rotated 90 degrees so that they grip a shroud rather than a ratline. the technique was to climb hand over hand holding on to a single shroud. If this sounds pedantic it's really not; the shrouds, being part of the standing rigging holding up the mast, were tightened until they were as stiff as rods of iron and therefore provided a relatively stable purchase in a rolling, pitching, yawing, environment.

Dear Graeme I almost forget to thank you.
Your critic notes saved the credebility of my Renaissance set 'sailors in the mast'.
This is what I did:

I sawed off the hands of three mastersculpts and drilled 0,4 mm holes in both hands and arm stumps, inserted roughened copper wire and glued the hands in a correct position, finished off by putty.
Then I made a new mold. I was lucky to find all 3 climbing men in one 4-pose mold. I cast them as many times as I had sets in stock already.
I opened all the bags and replaced the odd handed resin men by the correct handed.
Opening those bags meant I had to replace all the bag lables as well.
Then I had to correct the product image, made by Michel Vogt and Dirk Risser, by copy-paste proper positioned hands to cover the odd hands. Because these image fragments were hard to find, I had to restore the hands by drawing fingers with my computer mouse.

It took some weeks. But it was worth it.
Thank you Graeme

Great that the Golden Hind get some crew at last. Have the three figures that came with her somewhere, but I don't think I still have the ship.

Yea I know, I know. I am Old School. Its just because I like to work with my hands and do not want to work even more hours behind a computerscreen than I already do.
But are there really so few left of 'us'? I think Franznap, Frankzett and Massimo Costa still sculpt by hand.
