So glad to finally see the follow-up to the first Tudor set - was it last year? I think it was last year. I was waiting for more sets to start an army. I want all of these. Plus, I love Redbox sets.

I am a sucker for pikemen. I'm anxious for better pictures, but they all look good.

Who can be the opponent? The Spanish Infantry from RedBox? Any French set possible? I am not sure, because most sets are from earlier periods.

The Spanish are definitely an option, and the other European sets could be used to represent an English excursion onto the continent. There are also some useful figures in the Red Box medieval Irish sets

However, the reason I am excited about these figures is that England and Scotland have not always been the best of neighbours. For a long time raiding across the border was a major part of living in the area. So for me the new sets are offering a way to play out Border Reiver games - 'reivers' being the name attached to the raiders. So these new figures will play off against each other nicely.

I am thinking Pikeman's Lament by Osprey, as my players are familiar with the basic system and like them. The forces in these raids were never large, so a couple of units of Shot, some bowmen and a few pikes would provide an evening's entertainment, though pike armed units don't - so far as I have read - make up a big part of the raiding forces, however they would represent part of the defensive forces of a town such as Carlisle, Sedbergh, Berwick or Wallsend

The only thing that bothers me is the Horse element. So far Red Box have been less than impressive when it comes to modelling mounts for their cavalry. Their Musketeers mounts were good and I suppose that they could pressed into service if necessary as the furniture on the horses will do.

The thought occurs to me, that at the moment there is the old Dark Dream European knights, which for all of its faults, I quite like. Some of those in the lighter harness would do, plus some of the Red Box European Mercenary Cavalry. The horses for those weren't too bad and they worked out okay, so perhaps they would do as stand ins. Also – having another look in PSR, Red Box did a Scottish Light Cavalry that could be used at a push.

Thanks Steve! I have read a bit about the constant conflict between England and Scatland also in the Tudor age.

I like the figures anyway, so I will get them for my collection.

"A tellerbarret (also known as a platter hat or "pizza hat") is a large, flat, circular hat that was widely worn in the Low Countries and Germany during the 16th and early 17th centuries. It is highly popular in historical reenactment, especially for recreating Landsknecht mercenary outfits"

I'm pretty certain I have seen a picture of Henry VIII wearing one, certainly he went in for broad brimmed hats when he was younger. As for them being European, many English fought abroad as part of their education, so it could be a style adopted while in 'foreign service', as it were.

I forgot to mention that I think the Scurrers are really cool. They’re lovely figures and well painted.

I have been undercoating figures the last few days trying to get myself into gear to start painting. Anyway here are some of the Red Box Tudor infantry. The undercoat shows the figures off well.
