Galatians

Posted by Ochoin on 17 Apr 2025, 21:58

My beloved Celtic army has got a new lease on life with the recent change of rules - they now have a fighting chance to win some games.

I'm planning a Galatian Vs Successor game in a few weeks. After some research, I see the Galatians used scythed chariots. I want one. A single model would represent a unit of them - where to get the model.

I have neither the wheels nor horses (4?) suitable for a scratch build. So who makes a 1/72 - 20mm model?

Are you imagining something more Gallic or more Eastern? The Zvezda Persian chariot has some sort of scythes, but comes with barded horses. Alternatively HaT makes some Gaulish chariots but they have only two horses and would need scythes added.

Hard to say. The Galatians could obviously build chariots - they built and used light ones of their own.
One source says they captured some Seleucid scythed ones. Either might be OK. If I can track down the Zvesda set or maybe a Newline Persian one & add Celtic crew?

I've been looking at Resin Warfare's new Carthaginian chariots and I think they're kind of close to Seleucid chariots: https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d ... ars-566453 which is what I was planning to use them for, but obviously 3D printing is difficult but it's a decent looking option in my book.

As far as I know, just the Zvezda one is the only scythed, plastic chariot out there. Something quite incredible really being a famous weapon.

I am afraid you will have to add the scythes yourself. Then, something like the Caesar Assyrian Chariot, or Mittani Chariot, with maybe a change of horses and crew.

I've managed to get some Newline Persian chariots. As for scythes, I'm tempted to use old scalpel blades.

Dangerous? Maybe but my home made pikes are rather sharp & I quite like the idea of my figures being able to protect themselves from careless handling.
