Hellenistic Greek cavalry

Posted by Ochoin on 11 May 2021, 13:06

For the 'Pyrrhus Project', I've determined I need 2 units of light cavalry & 3 of heavy cavalry.

The Lights are finished: made up of Newline Greek Light Horse figures & HaT Alexander's Allied Cavalry
( http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=153 ).

The Heavies are a unit of Allied Italian Horse(long painted) - http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=521
And some Newline Macedonian Companions I'm just putting the finishing touches to.

I need another unit.

About the only thing I can find is the HaT Thessalians - http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=152

I'd like them with shields which means digging up 12 hoplite shields from somewhere, but otherwise they could easily be from Magna Graecia or Aetolia : Pyrrhic allies.

Have I missed any, fairly easily obtainable figures? NB I think I'll reject the Zvesda Alexander's cavalry as the style isn't that compatible with the other units.

Perhaps the new Linear A set may be useful? "Tarentine Horsemen of Magna Graecia":

I've looked at them & would have bought a box to use as light cavalry, if I hadn't already finished the 2 units I needed.

In my world, Lights have 8 figures, & Heavies need 12....so I'd have to buy 2 boxes at ruinously expensive prices:
nearly $30(A) a box + P&P of about $15. This is too much to pay for one single unit.

Good god, $30 (A)? That's theft. It's €10,00 here. Where are the times when a box of Airfix figures sold for $2 ?

I fully intend to buy the Linear A phalangites & other Pyrrhic sets when they come out, even at these prices, because there aren't any decent substitutes.

The point is the HaT Thessalians look as though they'll do OK as a cheaper replacement to the Linear A Magna Graecian cavalry?

As to cavalry, did you look at HaT Set 8054 Italian Ally Cavalry?

(PSR http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=521)

Or HaT Set 8021 Roman Cavalry

(PSR http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=138),

with some trimming or head swaps they might do. The HaT Romans have also a shield. I usually use thumbtacks as shields if I want to add some to figures that come without them - the old ones made of brass (or with a colored plastic cover over the flat top - easily removed).

For phalangites there's also Linear-B Set 078 Mithridatic Heavy Infantry

http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=2465

though you'll probably have them same issue with prices and postage.
