Late Roman High command

Posted by Ochoin on 24 Apr 2021, 00:32

As my L. Roman forces start to burgeon (I'm closing a deal for a second hand Tumbling Dice army pack), I have to consider some additional commanders.

My current force has three mounted commanders from the Italeri Goth cavalry.
However, with a bigger army, it occurred to me I now could avoid constant battling my Sassenach hordes & fight by splitting the Romans in two, adding the more ordered Saxons (select fyrd) as foederati & slugging it out in civil war games. For this I need 3 more command stands.

I have a few ideas of my own but I'm interested in any opinions from the esteemed Benno-crew.

Dear Ochoin,

there is many possibilities.
Here are some of mine !
for a foederati tribune, the MiniArt Germanic warriors set is perfect with some pose. they need almost zero conversion to be put on a horse :

One of my favorite roman officer comes from the Hät "middle" infantry :

If you want an officer more heavily protected, the officer of heavy later roman infantry is pretty good :

Both of them are perfect on horse too (conversion made by @paulbods):

Painted in the proper way, the officer of the roman late legio Italeri could do the job :

Last but not least; the roman cav from miniArt coulb be very usefull:

Quite an over whelming response.

Your figures are beautiful.

I'll be needing mounted for command. I'm impressed by your Miniart figures. Sadly, it is a set I do not have & is, I think, fairly unobtainable.

I'll probably end up buying the Tumbling Dice Clibinarii Command.

cheers donald

I have Tumbling dice clibanarii command, they are useful (I have some delayed proyecto for Arthur romanobritons..), 8 figures and several accesories
Be careful, they come without horses, you have to provide them separately or also buy to same supplier

Have you any photos?

As you know, the website has nothing & I can't find any TD Late Roman pics on the web.

I've bought TD's ECW figures & was very happy but I'd like to see what their Roman cavalry looks like before I buy a heap (including the Clib. command)

o Will try yo post here some.
You are totally right: TD site shows very little of the product they are supposed to sell!!
Anyway their service is quite good and after four purchases I really find nice and useful all the figures I got (mostly Huns, visigoths, normans, Vikings, crusaders and many, many armoured medieval horses..)

Carlos,

it is very good of you to offer. I *would* like to see photos but I don't want to put you to any trouble. just to satisfy my curiosity.

You are correct in that Paul of Tumbling Dice is pleasant & efficient & I am very pleased with the ECW figures I've bought in the past & have no reason to think that the sight-unseen Late Romans would be any worse.

So don't feel obligated to post photos.

best wishes, donald

ebay is very useful at such times: at one point or another, a set that we thought had disappeared comes to the surface: you have to catch it quickly! :D
I never tried TD figurines : inexplicably, they sell figurines ... which we don't know what they look like !! No photo on their site, it seems crazy ...

Well, yes. Friends who have met the owner of TD (Paul) at various British wargaming conventions where he often has a stand, say he is a touch eccentric (aren't we all?) but charming. For some reason, putting photos on his website isn't a priority.

And as I said, after making a few small orders than quite a few large ones, I found his 1/72 ECW figures to be great.

I will make a $100 order of Late Romans from him soon.
