Any under 30's?

Posted by kinjack on 27 Feb 2021, 00:00

Hope this isn't a rude thread to start, I mean no offence to any more senior members of the hobby on the notice board!

I'm a 25 y/o 1/72 painter and (very, very) occasional wargamer from the U.K.

I'm interested to see if there are any younger people here on the forum (not that I really see myself as young anymore!) ?

Seems like a lot of people in my generation who would have had an interest in historical figure painting and wargaming fell into the Games Workshop trap, and if they escaped that they fell into the 28mm Bolt Action realm.

Well I am not under 30 but I am under 50. Young enough?

Just kidding. I like how you described a generation of young modelers and wargamers being 'trapped' by GW and the Bolt Action.

There is so much more out there. But it seems the typical member here is a man who enjoyed modeling in his youth but set it aside for years, only to rediscover the love in middle age.

Well, I fit the 'middle-aged man' description here pretty well !! I was an avid collector/wargamer up until my mid 20s, when everything else (work/career/family/house/other pastimes etc) took over. My cherished hobby was shelved for 20 years until my late 40s, and has only really blossomed again now that I have taken early retirement in my late 50s.

I'm sure that there are many other parallels with other 'modelling/detail' hobbies, such as model railways. I would not expect a much younger person to have the time or perhaps patience to undertake the mass-conversions that feature in some of my 1/72 collections; and why should they when very good 'ready made' solutions are out there? The likes of GW and Warlord Games cater very well for their markets and provide everything needed to build armies and to wargame. And in normal times my local GW Franchise shop is often busy, predominantly with people who are younger, sometimes much younger, than me. OK, so this is not 'historical' wargaming as we know it, but It is positive and good to see.

I'm under 60. Does that count as two times under 30, young man? ;-)

For me it all started with Airfix, Atlantic and Matchbox. Then I had a period with 1/1 scale models, called women. And after I married and was settled Esci came with some wonderfull sets and battle sets. And that is where it all restarted again for me. ;-)

I'm 26 and also curious how many younger people are into the miniatures side of the hobby. I paint wargames armies, but don't play with them :-)

I think certain gaming systems and companies reach a critical popularity level and then dominate the market. Once that happens it is harder for a beginner to do something outside of the mainstream. I think this is the natural outcome of the miniatures market that just happened to coincide with our generation, rather than being a reflection of our values or nature as is occasionally implied.

That being said, I know of some very creative people making armies and terrain for their GW-type games.

Finally, there are occasional historical games popular with younger folks who seem to be very interested in historical accuracy and quality painting/modelling (Battlegroup for 1/72 WW2, and Lion Rampant, are two recent examples).

Well, it's easy to understand my age, looking at the name 8) ... 60 are not so far away !
Story similar to others here: Atlantic and Airfix from 5 to 12 (pure play, not painting) then modelling plastic airplanes, ships and tanks up to 16, then stop up to 45, when I said "it's time to restart". Now happy with my dioramas

"Any under 30`s?"

Barely when the plans flew into the towers.

I own the question of live, the universe and everything.
Add an even prime number.
Now you know my age when I started here at BFF.

24 (computer science student) here. I received my first 1 72 kit as a present when I was 6 yo. Fell in love with the hobby as a kid I almost forgot it during the dark years of adolescence just to discover it again 2/3 years ago. Now I dream to develope my own wargame and maybe, in a rather distant future, a videogame

I'm impressed by the number of 'younger' Forum members here. It is making me, as a couple of years short of 60, feel rather old...

Time for my slippers and an afternoon rest

I'll be 62 in April.
Is this a problem?
Maybe I should change my forum name to Methusalem. :-D

I am positive surprised how many BFF member are 30 and younger.

A few years back a similar question was ask at Missing lynx in the Braille scale (1/72 vehicle) section.
At this time it was hosted at Network 54. And this was close to the average of the age of the members there.

I'll be 50 in April, I played with figures when I was 8 years old.
It all started with Airfix figures, today there are, thank God, a large number of manufacturers and wonderful figures to collect and paint. I love my hobby and would like to see more young people interested in it so that it doesn't die out
