Thirty Years War civilians

Posted by steve_pickstock on 01 Dec 2020, 20:24

More specifically 1620s.

I am looking for some to complement the new Red Box and older Ultima Ratio Musketeers figures, but apart from a couple of items from the Revell Imperial Artillery set I am not aware of any. Are there? Thank you in advance.

Some of the Mars artillery sets might be possible. I've got spare figures from the Swedish leather guns, but they look too early to me.

Imex set 521 'Pilgrims' might yield some useful figures? The straw sunhats some of them are wearing are easily convertible to something more European.

It's not an easy set to get hold of though. How many civilians are you looking for? I may have a set in the loft (not certain, but maybe), but would be planning to use some of this set for my TYW wagon leaguer - when I get ;round to doing this!

Just had to remind myself about that set on PSR. I may have one myself, will have to have a rummage.

Despite the rave review on PSR there is a lot wrong with this set in terms of using them in a 30YW setting. The clothing for the men is sack-like. I know the Pilgrims rejected many of the values of the Europeans that they left, but the clothing actually looks nothing like the style of clothing at that time, more like modern Amish. The men would have had a higher, and more definite, waist to their doublets, and the breeches would have been more tapered towards the knees and less straight-up-and-down. The hats are too small. Too many of the women don't have hats, considering that these were 'godly' folk the thought of their women folk going bare headed would have been anathema.
Having said that, with some work most of the women could be usable at a push, I will need to dig mine out, thank you for the suggestion.

Some of the female figures from Imex Set 516 American Pioneers might also work (at least for peasants not for the wealthier folk). I'm thinking of PSR row 1.4, row 2.1, row 3.4, row 5.1.

To get an impression how people were dressed during the period, you could take a look at the pictures by the dutch painter Jan Vermeer (1632-1675). Besides the usual rich folk they feature a good number of common people, servants etc. The female figures from Imex 516 are pretty good for any period from early seventeenth to late 19th century I think.

I have had a look at the 516 set and some of the figures may domafter some work. The problem being that in the settlers set the women are wearing button up blouses, different from the bodice and shift arrangement worn by european women in the 1620s and also their headgear is wrong. Not massive jobs to remodel them (and add the bunched up over gown that was common as well), but in my original request I had been hoping that someone was aware of a range of covilians I had missed, saving me jobs like that.
