Airfix wwii german SMG - solved?

Posted by Jesse on 07 Jul 2020, 20:04

My number one mystery in the 1/72 plastic soldier world, the SMG-gunner in Airfix German infantry set, firing from the hip, what weapon it is. I have asked about this before, and got a few good suggestions. Don't remember if I got this one: Volksturmgewehr with a front grip. Is is that weapon??? Is the mystery solved???

The fig has a straight magazine, the Volksturmgewehr a bit curved, but close enough? :)

Hello Jesse,
The weapon you rever to, should be a mp 40. Airfix made it wrong, as it never ecxisted.

Yes I know it SHOULD be a mp40. But it is so different looking that either the sculptor just made something up or was inpired by some other weapon. Hence the mystery :)

I think he messed up, or it was a matter of easy casting, is my guess.

There are lots of unanswered questions about Airfix figures, my burning question has been why were so many US marines made without weapons in the first issue set ? the ones that had weapons were not much more than blobs of plastic. The second issue set were are superb, but not without faults.

My no. 1 question to them would be why did they hate the BAR so much? Not a single one of them in any of their US sets. The marines got a .30cal LMG without a loader and that's it.

Hard to sculpt in a way that made it look different from an ordinary rifle perhaps?

The weapon looks slightly like an Italian Beretta 38 submachine gun with an additional handle. https://www.gunsamerica.com/digest/bere ... mm-review/

At least a possibility, although I don't think German troops have regularly used that weapon...
