Down-Sizing

Posted by StellarX on 19 Jun 2017, 23:26

In this age of digital scanners and digital printers, is there anyone out there who has had a go at scanning 1/35 scale figures and scaling them down to 1/72? I can think of dozens of 1/35 sets I would love to possess in 1/72 scale.

If the technology available produces decent results then I would consider investment.

I've investigated into that, but normal ABS printers are not fine enough to do the job. Now there is also some printers that print with liquid resin, they might be good enough, but it will never be economically worth it.

How exactly the chinese companies rescale with ease soldiers from 1:35 to 1/72 that is something that I do not know.

I once read an article about that, which unfortunately is no longer available.

A man had action figures, well detailed, from a well known epic series of films. Which will have a new part in December ;)

He dismantled the action figures and made new casts of them. He added gasoline to his silicone. He stated that it smelled awful. After a weak or so the gasoline had gone from the silicone. He now had a shrunk silicone form. After making one part with that mold he had to repeat the process and voila ended up having a figure in 1/72.

A lot of work, but accomplshable.

I also have use this technique.
But we don't use gasoline we use: NAPHTHA
The fuel of Zippo lighters is naphtha.
I added 75% Zippo fuel with the silicone and stirred well. (you have to be patient) Then I added the accelerator for the silicone, and stirred again. ;-)
After a few hours you can extract the master from the mould. After 5 days the mould is smaller 25%.
You make a copy and repeat as many times you need to reach the scale you want!
A lot of work but you have exact copies in many scales.

I have a 3D printer with scanner and I have attempted to scale down Airfix moderns such as Brits Germans and Russians with no success. I need a very expensive scanner.
