Hittite Army

Posted by Ochoin on 08 Apr 2017, 04:27

As I mentioned in a previous thread, I've acquired a four boxes of Caesar Hittites.

Without getting too technical, I'd like to build an 800+ point Field of Glory army to oppose my existing Mycenaean & NKE armies. So what figures can I add as allies & mercenaries to make up the numbers?

AFAIK: everything will need to be Caesar figures?

The Hittite boxes I have will supply a heavy chariot unit, some defensive spearmen, javelin armed skirmishers, a few bowmen & an armoured Royal Guard (heavy infantry spearmen): not enough units.

I have a Mitannian Light chariot unit already painted & some Sea Peoples who can be allies.
The Caesar Bedouin sets are a possibility as mercenaries? If so, I can add a camel unit, javelinmen & archers & a medium infantry spear unit.

Comments & suggestions are invited.

My NKE army (about 1200 points) has quite a few Newline figures & my Mycenaean force (850) is mostly Newline.
I'll certainly look to Newline to plug any gaps but I am trying to make this army, as far as possible, a budget one!

If you're wanting large numbers why not have a word with Sean ( Newline) to see what he can do?

Is this the old bias against plastic figures creeping back? :-D

And I appreciate it (in spite of my attempt at wry humour: apologies)

Dear Ochion,

Most ancient army lists show both what enemies and what mercenaries are historic possibilities.
In case you have no such army list books in your home library I can copy the Hittite pages in my books for you and post them here.

If it would be no trouble.

The problem is suitable figures. A nice Italian chap suggested Kaskians using Orion Scythian infantry. I did some research but as far as I can tell, the Kaskians looked nothing like Scythians.

Your list may have something workable I've overlooked (would that Caesar would release Babylonians)

No, thats what we are here for :-D
Did you consider the Caesar Hebrew Warriors?
A close neighbor of the Hittites, the set has a wide variety of dressing styles.

I found at least 8 different Hittite army lists for WRG and DBA compiled between 1980 and 2000.
Some of the writers distinguish 3 different periods:

Hittite old and middle Kingdom 1680-1380 BC
Hittite Empire 1380 - 1180 BC
Neo Hittite and later Aramaean 1100 - 710 BC

Let me know what your period of focus is, because otherwise it will be a huge load of information to upload here.

Or do you just like to hear the names of their allies, auxiliaries and vassal states?

I think Empire. That allows for my NKE & Mycenaeans to be used as opponents. And for the Sea Peoples to be used as allies or enemies. I'd really love some Canaanite-Syrians but Caesar started....& stopped....with their Mitanni chariot set.

I hope the resolution of these scans is good enough to read:

It is worth noticing the Syrian vassal troops of the Hittites include Canaanites, Phoenicians, Mitanni, Retennu, Ugarits and Khaaru.

From DBM Phil Barker and richard Bodley Scott 2000:

WRG Phil Barker 1981:

WRG M.Holland and C.Froud 1991:

WRG D. Hutchby and S. Clark 1984:

If you need any explaination to the codes, just let me know.

Now the question is: what did all those Syrians, Anatolians, Hurrians, Mitanni, mountaintribes and bedoeins look like? :eh:

Though a 28mm metals range, the Hittite range by Hail Caesar gives a good impression and wide variety of costumes and equipments.:

If you are willing to swop some heads and shields from plastic figure sets
then there must be plenty of possibilies. :-D

You could maybe use Trojans from Caesar and Atlantic, and make them pass as some anatolic subjects. If you buy the African Infantry from Hat, there is a few poses that could be used as any Syrian standard subject. The Scythians from Orion could look like some anatolian hilltribe, a lot of them are very standard with square shields and just a phrygian cap. Or maybe persians from Caesar, some of them are very like elamites or similar people.

Of course, you would be buying a lot of sets for just 2 or 3 usable poses.
