Hittite chariots

Posted by Ochoin on 02 Apr 2017, 04:03

A question.

I'm going to add a Hittite force to my Bronze Age wargaming & have acquired some Caesar boxes.

The chariots have this odd circle on their sides (see raised disc in the PSR scan, below):

What is it? As I'll need to paint it, I have to know.

Thanks, donald

That`s the horn. :affraid:

Good question.
I think only the sculptor of Cäsar know it.
It do not look like an ejector pin.

Maybe it was planned to fix (glue, snap) an quiver or a shield.
Or if it is at both side it is the strong point for a bar to connect both side.
As a handrail. If they run over bumps or enemy.

A few illustrations show a circle on the sides.

May be this a bronze pegs wether to fit quivers or to stabiles the box of the chariot. Have a look how I painted them:

the hetitites used Iron - but it was expensive. So I decided onyl some weapons to paint as iron. Today I would use more iron, especially for the wheels.

A instructiv reading:

this is an example of my "old" painting style using water colours (Gouache). Long ago......

Hi Ochoin, that is a good question, unfortunately I haven't any clue, but I am interested in the answer as well :)

FredG: I didn't know the last illustration you show us (painted by G.Rava, at least it is easy to identify the painter), it has been made for a book ?

Roland, it is always a pleasure to see pictures of your marvelous chariots (that I know for years :)). You are one of the artists whose work convinced me to start painting minis again - thank you for that. And yes I agree, more iron for the weapons.

The three colour illustrations show it as a brass/gold colour so I'd say that'll do for the painting.

What is it? It's a brass/gold coloured circular disc thingy that goes on the side of a Hittite chariot :eh:

Hmmm. I think I'll go with a bright bronze then & put it down as the Bronze Age version of the chrome trim you find on motor cars today.

Thanks for the help, gents!

I am deeply shocked. Nobody is interested in serious research, always fooling around. We Are not collecting for fun! The "whatthehellisthisathingfor" question is moving brains and hearts. Stay ernest! You can make jokes Monday morning at work.

I'm still monkeying around with the Mahdist Wars* but I should start soon.
I'll grind out 4 heavy Hittite chariots for a Battle Group (unit) & then start on the Hittite infantry.

It *is* intriguing.

Caesar normally do their research so I'm not surprised to see the disc on NKE wall paintings.
We may never know what the darn thing was though.

I supposed it was a kind of fixing-point for quivers. This was my idea when painting them formerly. You can see quivers at most of the hittite stones. Here a picture of a reconstruction:
