Your favourite tank?

Posted by Jesse on 02 Dec 2016, 08:53

Now that I have been discussing the T-55 in another post, I would like to ask you fellow hobbyists:

If you must pick one, which is your most favourite tank?

A difficult question yes! For me it's either the Tiger II, T-55 or T-72. But if I must choose one now, it is the T-55 (and T-54, since it's basically the same tank). The tank has been around since the late 40s/early 50s and is still soldiering on in many places. Cannon fodder for modern tanks, but much more good looking than all those square Abrams, Challengers and the like.

Not a figure question, but hope it's ok :)

Hello Jesse!

This is really a very very difficult question. I find this almost impossible to answer. There are so many tanks that I would like to build. But it simply lacks time. :(

I love prototypes, paper tanks and unusual conversions. :yeah: This is the biggest thing for me.

Currently I am building a transport tank 'Fuchs (4 * 4)'. This is a prototype. Of this tank only 3 vehicles were built. It took me a lot of time to get information about this rare vehicle. But it was worth it!! I love it. :-D Soon the first pictures come ....

I also love the WW2 E-tank-family. E-10 I have already built. E-20 will finish in a short time. E-100 I have now bought. I am looking forward to assembling the tank.

What makes me very much fun just now is the WW2 'Gepanzerte Landwasserschlepper'. What a crazy construction! But the assembling and the painting took me very much fun.

I could always go on like this. There is no end. There are just too much intersting tanks. But everyone will find his favorite tank! :-D

I could not agree any more with Hellboy!!! So many super cool tanks all with different pros and cons.
I will however in the spirit of the question say mine is the King Tiger!!

When I was young the Tiger was it for me. I remember having some crappy snap together model and I thought that was the coolest. Then as I got a little older I read about the King Tiger. Well its a "King" isn't it. :P That has to be way cooler and command much more attention!!!! So from me you have an answer. :yeah:

Panther (Ausf. G)
For my taste his design look the best.
But it is in hard competition to the Kingtiger with Porsche turret.

Since I was a kid until now there is only one favorite tank for me: Sherman
Build a lot of them, mostly Hasegawa kits, and every time I see these kits, I have to say "don't buy it"
Even if other tanks are better, I keep to my one and only tank, called Sherman

When talking about the subject of tanks i always remember of my grandfather, who left me three years ago, in the age of 92. He was a "Panzermann" during the WW2, drove and commanded the Pz. III, IV and V. He told me much about it. Since these days I've read a lot about and lost my tank-heart at the "Panther". I think it was a successful design.

But there are also many other appealing vehicles, if someone can talk as "attractive" about armament systems. ;-) For example, i also like the Pz. II Luchs. Or the Merkava, the M-24 Chaffee or the T-72. The last one I know from my service in the army.

Personally, i was a crewmember on a self-propelled howitzer 2S1 - for this reason, of course, my absolute favorite. But unfortunately no tank! :(

i would go with the M24 Chaffee, not thats its the best or anything, just like the looks of it, and the fact that the dutch army used them. ;-)

Nice suggestions guys!
I must also say, in contrast, the Pz VI TIger I have never caught much interest for me for some reason, even as a kid. There is much talk about it and of course it has a special place in WWII history and therefore have interest for me as a tank in general (all tanks are more or less interesting!), but I have never wanted it as a model for example. Perhaps it is because when I was a kid I got the King Tiger as a model and thought it was the famous "Tiger", and then only later discovered that is was in fact the Tiger I that is known as "the Tiger" in history books. But the Tiger I looked boring compared to the King!

stenfalk: So you served on the 2S1? Interesting! What position did you serve as? I was a gunner on the Leopard 2A4 (Stridsvagn 121) when serving in the Swedish Army 1999-2000. They were old ex West German tanks so everything was written in German :)
In the 2S1, did you have only high explosive shells or did you have some anti-tank ammunition as well?

Jesse, my service in the army is a bit further back than yours, i was under arms from 1987-1990. Because i was at a school for officers, i did not occupy a fixed place in the 2S1, but had to occupy any position (except the driver) in the training. But there was a little schooling for drivers on MT-LB. The goal was, of course, the preparation for the function of a leader for a unit with 6 vehicles (lieutenant). This was always the beginning, before one could recommend himself for higher places.

The combat kit of the howitzers consisted of mixed ammunition, most of them were HE, but, of course, every vehicle was equipped with armor-piercing HE. And the first we've learned was targeting directly enemy vehicles. The shooting on targets, which were not visible, followed only later.

However, i am glad that we had to use our weapons only for the exercise... :sweatdrop:
